I am in New Zealand on a work vacation, so I can only follow what is going on in China on http://t.sina.com.cn/, the Chinese twitter.

It is hardly the official Xinhua release, its not even as official as my column here in China Daily, but it is the first form of citizen journalism in China. So let me tell you, very unofficially, what the people are tweeting about our law-making body.

The first tweet I saw was a fantastic piece of photo journalism. At the arts and cultural council, Mr. Feng Xiaogang, the esteemed box office wonderboy director of China is picking his teeth with his mouth wide open, his eyes wide open, and his hand stuck fairly deep in his mouth. This photo had a high pass around rate, last time I looked, something like more than 400 times. The comments to the photo will have you rolling on the floor with laughter. So, I hope you have heard, sending dirty jokes by text message in China is going to cost you from now on.  How much? You ask, well, that depends on where you live. In Beijing you will not be able to send text again from the same number, in Shanghai, you number will be cancelled entirely. I am not sure whether the same rule applies to English dirty jokes, I don’t think our system is designed to pick up four letter words, just real  dirty, bad, nasty characters.

Now, in my humble opinion, this new attempt at cleaning up text messaging in china is instigated by a saboteur who wants to destroy the value of Chinese mobile network.  This kind of rule is simply not enforceable in our language. Chinese is the most vague and imprecise language in the world, we have tones which drives foreigners crazy, you must have been through the ma-ma-ma-ma bit, where you don’t know whether you are asking a question, calling your mother, or your horse, or cursing all

I have always been a fan of Zhang Ziyi. She is beautiful, hard working and talented. However, her  reputation has been tarnished through a series of scandals which has unraveled in public eye in the past 6 weeks. What happened was a real life drama of power, greed and sex that is in everyway as dishy as Dallas, and better.

I have always been curious about the German word Schadenfreude which is such perfect translation of a Chinese proverb – xing zai le huo ( 幸灾乐祸)。Kind of funny how only Germans and Chinese can nail down that nasty sentiment in their respective languages. The fall of Zhang Ziyi was nothing less than a Schadenfreude Fest between the press,the public and whoever it was that wanted to see her fall.

It all started with Ink Gate. Apparently, some goons showed up at the Park Hyatt Residence in Beijing late last December and splashed black ink all over an OMEGA ad billboard which featured Zhang Ziyi.  This was totally a plann

It was truly “I came, I was seen, and I conquered”.  The lines outside Chinese cinemas for Avatar was amazing. Apparently there was a 2000 people run on tickets at a  cinema in Beijing, and there was a line that curved 18 times in Shanghai. It was bitter cold weather in Beijing when the film was released, so rich people sent their drivers at 4am to line up for tickets, spoiled brats sent their mothers. This only happened in mainland China, somehow, the film struck a chord with the Chinese audience and created nothing less than a social phenomena.

The Film is a brilliant promotion of Pandoran values which just happens to be identical to liberal American values. There is the white man’s guilt vis-à-vis native Indians.  Most Chinese see themselves as the Indians, I know they are not Indians, they are Na’vi and blue, but we identify with them. The Mighty seemed to have fallen in December 2009.  The release of Zhang Yimo’s latest picture has caused a serious wave of Mo trashing on the internet.  As one neticen has pointed out on sina’s twitter: “Mo is no Mo.”

I must say, it is fun to watch the mighty fall, and I have done my fair share of twittering on the subject as well. The truth is , no one wanted to say anything bad about him for 18 months, he is the Chinese creative wunderkid in charge of the Olympic Opening Ceremony. The nation rallied behind him and he delivered, the Ceremony was amazing, and everyone, I mean just everyone, was terribly pleased.

So what went wrong with Mo’s latest film? On the surface: Nothing. It should have been  another crowd pleaser.  The script is an adaptation of the Coen Brothers 1984 film

今天的“道德沙塵暴”，恰恰源于積重難返的“國民性問題”。中國沒有“公德”，也沒有“私德”，只有在熟人之間，才講道德。其他地方，就不講。這樣一種道德，顯然是靠不住的，甚至不是道德。
