Reflections on my first semester in Sydney

On 2nd Jun. 2011, I went to the last class in this semester. I want to write something to record my life and studies here, as well as my own feelings toward them. That's the reason why I call this reflection. It's not comprehensive cause recetely I am busy with all my assessment tasks.

Studies Why am I so busy? We do not have many lectures, four classes a week, and two hours each. However, we really need to read a lot no matter to catch up with courses or accomplish the assessment tasks. Lecture notes have at least fifteen pages, which are difficult to understand. You know what, not because you are a bad reader, but they are comprised of various research results. In assessment tasks, you have to use many references, because all of your ideas have to be supported by research findings. If you have to hand in a four thousand essay, then you have to read for at least twenty journals with about twenty pages each. As a result, I have been writing day by day except for the mid-break. The sickest thing is I read so much without writing a word.

Relationship The relationship between people is simple. Many people have clear conceptions about friends, classmates, and roommates. It’s a lucky thing that your classmates or roommates treat you as a friend, but it just doesn’t happen often. The truth is people are too busy with their own life. They feel difficult to balance their own working and studies. Then how can they spare time to make friends? I suppose another reason is they have a clear decision about their life, and they do not spend time in someone they do not feel necessary to get to know with. Concerning my own experience, I initially made friends with three nice people here whom I think are really good friends, but the truth is I only have these three until the end of the semester. Most of my classmates are just classmates, and my landlord now is still my landlord. Thus, I talk as much as possible to whom I just met, cause I am not sure we have time to see each other again.

Environment This is one of the my favorable thing in Australia. Initially, I often asked people who just arrived here what is their favorite thing about Australia, and the environment is the most frequent answer. There is no pollution everywhere, no matter air polltion or water pollution. You do not have to bear the tail gas of buses, you can drink tap water directely, and you would finally find your sole very clean after a long walk outside. Students always seat themselves beside the door of classroom before class begins. The weather here is really mild. In summer you would not feel hot since you stand under a tree, whilst in winder two clothes are fairy enough.

Australian dollars Well, I figure Australian currency has a strong competence of purchasing. Could you believe that you are able to buy a T shirt by $3? Of cause, it was made by another country. Electronics in apple company are not expensive in terms of the salary in Australia. Provided that you are capable of earning $10 per hour, you are able to buy an Ipad by one to two weeks' pay.

Current situation of immigration The most common topic among international students is the application of PR. This is because it used to be easy to apply for PR in Australia, and it is easy to become an Australian citizen if you have an Australia PR. Most Chinese students studying Accounting or IT seem to have the intention to apply for PR. However, these years the policies on immigration are tighter and tighter. Plus, the Australian currency is growing higher and higher. There are still hundreds of thousands of students rushing into Universities here. We always questioned that why did not they choose to receive higher education in the Great Britain or the United States? However, provided that you have the ability to get the PR thing, do you really want to stay here? I don't deny the benefits it would bring, but once you decided to stay here, you have no chance to regret. You cannot live in China any more since you have to go outside the boundary every three months, you cannot work in China because the work here is quite different from that in China, and you cannot stay with your parents any more.
