CHARPTER SEVEN 第七章
HOW TO SMOKE THE DRIVER 一号木
*** Foiling A Very Fast Camera
To this point I’ve talk very little about how much club-head speed I actually generate through impact. Here are the numbers from an analysis made in 1998:Through the hitting area my club-head is moving at 119 m.p.h. , with my ball coming off the clubface at 180 m.p.h. that isn’t as fast as some of the guy who enter national long drive contests, but it’s definitely up there for a PAG Tour pro. The result is plenty of distance with every club in the bag. The game became much easier for me when I was capable of reaching most par-5 holes in two shots and was able to hit the ball higher and softer with less effort.
The photos you see here and on the following pages were shot in 1998. The camera we use for these types of swing sequences known as the Hulcher. It can shoot up to 65 frames per second. It doesn’t sound like a camera; it makes whirring, rat-a-tat sound as the spool of film advances. The frames appear in reverse order, reading from right to left, due to the way the film is loaded.
When the photographs taken that day were developed, the editors of Golf Digest informed me of a unique problem: They didn’t have many shots of me precisely at impact. My club-head moved through the ball so quickly that the camera only caught the moment of truth a few times. The next time they photographed my swing, they asked me to make a few extra swings from each angle, to be sure they caught my club in contact with the ball.
