CHAPTER13

DEVELOP YOUR ARTISTIC SENSES (FEEL, TOUCH, GREEN-READING)

13.1 Touch and Feel Are Different (感和觉)

Many golfers use the two terms interchangeably without thinking about it. I think we need separate terms to describe these distinct attributes. Very simply, I liken touch on the greens to knowing what to do, and feel to knowing how to do it. With these distinctions it becomes possible to focus on and measure your touch and feel abilities, I’ll discuss how to improve touch first and the feel later in this chapter.

Touch

Feel

Touch is knowing WHAT IS REQUIIRED for this putt:

Feel is knowing HOW TO SUPPLY what is needed for the putt:

* What is the length of the putt?

* How does this practice swing look for this putt?

* What is the speed of the green’s surface

* How does this swing feel?

* What is the roll: uphill, downhill, flat, or some combination?

* How far will this swing roll the ball if I use it?

* What size swing (what power) is required?

* How perfect is this preview stroke?

13.2 Sharpen Your Touch (锐“感”)

Good touch is knowing somewhere in your mind’s eye what is needed to roll a good putt. it’s knowing what the putt will require – how far how much up – or downhill – and what it will look like as it rolls toward the hole. And it’s knowing what the stroke that will produce that roll looks like before any of these things happen.

Your knowledge of all these was good, you have good touch. But even if you know perfectly well what was needed, they may or may not have the proper feel to produce that perfect stroke.

To have good putting touch, you first must know how long your putts are. While you can be fairly accurate just by looking at and guessing the length of a putt, your subconscious needs much more accurate information. And there are times when your eyes can deceive you, times when things appear to be different from reality.

It doesn’t matter if you learn to recognize your putt distances in feet, steps, yards. Any measuring system that lets you accurately judge and differentiate lengths consistently from one putt to another, from practice green to golf course, and from one year to the next, will do.

*** Triangle Drill(三角练习法)

This is my favorite touch-development drill. Pick three holes. Walk from the first hole to the second, count your steps and determine the distance. Walk from the second hole to the third and repeat your distance measurement. Then walk from the third hole back to the first, completing the triangle. You now know the three distances of 12 different putts. First putts around the triangle in a clockwise direction, from the outside of each hole. Then putt again around in the clockwise direction, but this time from the inside of each hole. After these six putts, play the triangle counterclockwise from both inside and outside of the triangle. You’ve tried 12 different putts, four of each distance by walking only three distances you can test you touch to sense the subtle differences required for each of the four putt situations to each hole.

*** Edge-of-Green Drill(果岭纵推)

Putting to the far edge of the practice green is a good drill for a course you don’t know. It will both acquaint you with the speed of the greens and warm up your stroke mechanics. Take three balls and walk off the distance from one edge of the green to another. Putt that distance back to where you started from, trying to roll each putt exactly to the edge of the green without touching it. As you walk to your three balls, notice if you were putting with or against the grain then putt the balls back in the opposite direction, over the same distance to the edge of the green, to see if you can detect any differences caused by the grain. Doing this several times won’t take long and will adjust your touch for the unfamiliar greens.

“Draw-Back” is the best games of all for developing and refining touch for putts longer than 35 feet. Because the odds of making long putts are so poor, the real skill in lag putting is rolling your putts consistently close to the hole, taking the pressure off your short putting and eliminating any chance of three-putting. And Draw-Back is designed to develop exactly that skill.

The reward in Draw-Back comes in lagging your first putt close enough to the hole so that after drawing it back 34 inches, the next putt is significantly less than six feet, so the probability of make it is great. You can play Draw-Back by yourself, but you will learn far more quickly if you play nice-hole games in competition with good lag putters and with something at stake.

*** Safety-Drawback(安全区与后退)

“Safety-Drawback” is a drill that you can play as a game designed to sharpen your touch on putts of less than 35 feet. The purpose is to exercise the ability of your mind’s eye to recognize the stroke needed to produce the perfect putting speed and distance to optimize your chances of holing putts in this range. To develop your touch on these “makable” putts, you want to play Safety-Drawback to many different holes. It’s the judging of your speed and distance result after each putt that teaches your mind’s eye the proper touch for the future. This is the touch you want to carry over into your putting for makable-range putts up to 35 feet.

*** Double-Safety-Drawback(安全区与加倍后退)

This is the ultimate pressure drill for practicing touch on putts between 10 and 30 feet, because the penalty for rolling first putts the wrong speed is so severe.

This game also emphasizes the skill of holing 6- to 10-footers, putt you often face whenever you play. It’s best to play Double-safety-drawback to a new hole every time: This makes your mind’s eye focus on a new putt, a new distance, and the touch for a new stroke each time.

Finally, remember that it is of the utmost importance that you use your routine and ritual during all of these games to maximize on-course benefits later.

*** Rules of the Game

==DrawbackDB):

1.       Play for putts of 35 feet or greater.

2.       prior to each putt( except first), ball must be drawn back straight away from hole 34 inches, from spot previous putt stopped (use putter length – usually 35 inches – to measure 34-inches drawback distance).

== Safety-drawback (SDB):

1.       Play for putts of 15 to 35 feet.

2.       First putts coming to rest in “safe-Zone” are exempt from drawback and can be putted out from where they stopped.

3.       First putts which stop outside “safe-zone” must be drawn back 34 inches straight away from hole before putting again.

4.       All putts after second putt must be drawn back 34 inches before putting.

== Double-Safety-Drawback (DSDB):

1.       Play for putts between 10 and 30 feet.

2.       Rules similar to SDB, except when first putt stops in “Safe-Zone”, it must be drawn back 34 inches prior to putting.

3.       If first putt misses “Safe-Zone”, and on all putts after second putts, balls must be drawn back double (68inches) prior to putting.

Every golfer should run the “Chi-putt Test” to determine the distance at which the chi-putt becomes a better choice than putting. The chip-putt is a stroke make with a putter but utilizing a chipping grip, stance, posture, swing, and follow-through.

When you have a long putt that you will likely leave short, don’t putt it, but stand tall and chi-putt it. You already know how to chi-putt: Just chip the ball using your putter. The only question is, at what distance will you chi-put better than you putt? To find it, run the Chi-putt test:

Walk off distance from 50 to 100 feet and mark them with tees in increments of 10 feet. At 50 feet, putt three balls, then chi-putt three. See which technique rolls your balls closer to the hole on the average. Move to 60 feet and do the same. Repeat each remaining distance.

At some point, chi-putting will become easier and produce better results than putting. This becomes your chi-putt distance for the day. Repeat the test on several different days, finding the average distance from which you consistently chi-putt better than your putt. Therefore, use the chi-putt technique on the course for all level putts greater than this length.

If 70 feet is your switch-over distance on level putts, you probably will find the switch distance for the uphill putts and downhill putts. Try chi-putting in all these situations to get a feel for it.

*** Phony-Hole Drill (便携洞杯)

The “Phony-Hole Drillis one of my favorites for working on touch, especially when the putting green is crowded. It utilizes a device I carry in my bag at all time, the Phony-Hole, a thin, flexible circle of black rubber. Just smaller than the diameter of a real hole. The Phony-Hole almost looks like a real hole when lies on the surface of a green, is thin enough to let putts roll smoothly over it, and comes in handy when the practice green is full of golfers and there is no open hole available. By throwing down a Phony-Hole, you create you own target to putt to, and work on speed control by seeing if the putts you “make” (those that roll over the Phony-Hole) stop near 17inches behind the hole.

*** Putting over Level Changes

The best way to adjust for putting over a level change on a green – say, from one tier to another – is to not adjust your touch at all. Instead, imagine a hole behind or in front of the real hole to a level green. If you are changing levels uphill, imagine the imaginary hole is farther away; if your putt changes downhill, imagine the hole is close to you. Learn to estimate how much these level changes effect your normal roll distance, and then learn to see your imaginary hole at that adjusted distance. It’s much easier to imagine another hole than it is to adjust you touch for distance, which you’ve worked so hard to develop.

Train yourself to see imaginary holes by using the Phony-Hole on two-tier practice greens. Lay the Phony-Hole in front of (or behind) the real cup and imagine you are putting on a level surface to it when you take your practice stroke looks to determine your preview stroke. It will take a few minutes of practice to learn how far behind or ahead of the real hole the Phony-Hole should be placed to get good results.
