The park was the first federal land reserve and has served U.S. presidents, pro athletes and crime bosses.

U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, crime boss Al Capone and baseball icon Babe Ruth all shared the same bathing spot. It was the Hot Springs National Park, and it is the oldest federal land reserve in the United States.

Initially designated a federal reservation in 1832, Hot Springs National Park has attracted many visitors over the years. With an average temperature of 62 degrees Celsius and rich mineral deposits, the springs’ water was said to have a therapeutic effect on its bathers. In fact, Hot Springs became the baseball spring training site for the major league’s premier teams from the 1880s–1940s so players could soothe their muscles in the waters.

Today, Hot Springs National Park attracts visitors of all sorts — not just athletes and other elites. Nestled in the Diamond Lake Region of Arkansas’ Ouachita Mountains, the park provides for myriad outdoor activities such as fishing, hiking and camping. And after all that physical exertion, you can relax in the hot spring waters!
