Always Something Wrong
Michael worked in a popular sandwich shop on
State Street. He had many regular customers and took pride in
making very good sandwiches. Some customers sat in the shop
during lunch hour and enjoyed their sandwiches.
"Delicious," said Mrs. Vogel. "Delightful," said Mr.
Brantz. "Fantastic," said Miss Patterson.
Michael felt very happy to hear his customers'
compliments. Unfortunately, there was one customer who
was never completely satisfied. Mr. Sullivan always found
something wrong with his sandwich. Every day, he ordered the same
turkey sandwich with lettuce, tomato, cheese, pickles, and
mayonnaise. "And no mustard, please," he reminded
Michael.
Michael made that sandwich day after day for Mr.
Sullivan. But somehow, it was never quite right. The
turkey slices were too thick. Or the lettuce was too
soggy. Or the tomatoes were too soft. Or the cheese was
too hard. Or the pickles were too sour. Or the
mayonnaise was too heavy. Michael didn't like to hear these
things. But he remembered Mr. Sullivan's comments and tried
to make him happier the next day.
Finally, Michael was sure he had made the
perfect sandwich for Mr. Sullivan. "Taste this, please," said
Michael. "The turkey slices are thin. The lettuce is crisp.
The tomato is firm. The cheese is soft. The pickles are
sweet. And the mayonnaise is very, very
light."
Mr. Sullivan took a bite. "Hmm," said Mr.
Sullivan. "Better, I suppose. But this sandwich could use a little
mustard."
