第一部分：英语发音练习

On Friday Frank Fripp found four free flights to France.

Short sharp shears shave shapely sheeps' shanks.

这些看似简单的句子，但读起来很拗口。班里每一位同学都必须大声朗读一遍。

第二部分：课堂自由发言，先学习一篇短文：

A study on violent crime, state-by-state, was recently published, and all the states were ranked for their levels of safety. The most important factors are tho-ught to be the levels of education, poverty, and human services ( healthcare, assistance for the poor, etc ). 

The Institute for Economics and Peace reported that crime has been decreasing in the U.S. For the last two decades. The greatest reduction of crime in that period occurred in California and New York. California, however, is still ranked  as the 32nd  most peaceful state, and out of 50, that puts us in the most violent third of the country.

Maine was declared the most peaceful state. The least crimes and lowest % of police officers are found in Maine.

Second best was Vermont. High education rates, low unemployment, and some of the best human services are consi-dered the key factors there.

New Hampshire was cited as the third most peaceful state, where the lowest % of people live in poverty, the economy is stable, and the people enjoy the highest level of education in the country. The fourth most peaceful state was Minnesota, and Utah was ranked #5.

Louisiana was ranked as the most violent place in the country. The poorest population, the worst schools, and the worst human resources were recorded there. They also have the most police, the most prisoners, and the most murders in the country.

One question that might be asked is, "Why is t so easy to buy a gun there?"

Tennessee was the second most violent state, and Nevada was ranked 3rd. The next 7 most dangerous states are all southern states.

What does it matter to you?

The individual taxpayer in Maine pays 1,200 every year to keep his state peaceful.

The individual taxpayer in District of Columbia ( Washington, D.C. ) pays 7,100 per year for peace!

Unit 12

A. Complete the paragraph. Use a, an, the, or 0.

With a credit card, you can buy things now and pay for them later. This can be useful, but it can also be expensive. That's because a credit card companies charge 0 interest on the amount you owe them. A debit card is different - it's linked to a bank account. When you pay for something with a debit card, the money comes out of the account it's linked to.

If you have a credit card, use it carefully. And make sure you always pay the full amount of the bill as soon as you can. Try not to have an unpaid balance so you don't have to pay 0 interest charges.

B. Complete the sentences so that they make future real conditional statements.

1, If I open a bank account, the bank will give me a cdebit card.

2, We will be able to go on vacation, if we save our money.

3, If she get a loan, she will have to pay interest.

4, It will be easier to save money, if you make a budget.

C. Complete the sentences so that they make present unreal conditional statements.

1, They would start their own business if they had enough money.

2, We would save money if we took the bus instead of driving.

3, If I didn't eat out so much, I would spend a lot less on food.

4, If you opened a Mexican restaurant, people would come.

D. Complete the sentences. Use the corret form of the verb.

1, If you suddenly get a lot of money, would you quit your job?

2, If she needs money, I'll lend it to her.

3, I wouldn't do that if I were you.

4, If we stop buying coffee at the coffee shop, we will save about $20 a week.

語法註釋：与现在事实相反的虚拟语气

 此时条件从句的谓语动词用过去式，主句的谓语则要用 would (should，could，might)+动词原形：

If there were no subjective mood，English would be much easier. 要是没有虚拟语气，英语就会容易得多了。

If I knew his telephone number，I would ring him up. 我要是知道他的电话号码，我就给他打电话了。

在虚拟条件句，动词be的过去式通常用were(不管是单数还是复数)，但在现代英语，单数情况也可以用was。

We could ask him if he were [was] here. 他要是在 这里，我们就可以问问他了。

但是在某些表达(If I were you，as it were等)中，be只用were这一形式：

If I were you，I should go and see the doctor at once. 假若我是你，我会马上去看医生。

The sky is covered，as it were，with a black curtain. 天空好像是被黑幕遮住了似的。

有时在虚拟条件句也可能用 could，might 等，那多半是因为语义的需要：

If he could help you，he would help you. 要是他能够帮助你的话，他会帮助你的。
