小字母，大道理

英语语言中共有26个字母，它们被划分为辅音（21个）和元音（5个）。大部分英语学习者学英语就是始于它们。26个小小字母不仅在词汇学中占据不可替代的位置，在许多日常表达中也被赋予生动的涵义，笔者愿在此和英语爱好者们分享一些与小字母表达有关的英语习语。

1. ABC

1）“字母表”，ABC是字母表26个字母中最开始的3个字母，因此久而久之人们也习惯于把字母表简称为ABC。

2）“简单的知识”、“基础知识”、“入门知识”。

—He is studying the ABC of writing. 他正在学习写作的基础知识。

—Let’s learn from A and B. 让我们从简单的开始学起吧。

2. as easy as ABC “极其简单”、“相当容易”

—It is as easy as ABC to finish the homework in 30 minutes. 30分钟内完成作业是件极其简单的事情。

3. from A to B “从一处到另一处”

—Car rental was the best way to get us from A to B. 从一处跑到另一处的最佳方法是租一辆车。

4. not know from A to B “一字不识”、“目不识丁”

—What a pity that Mary doesn’t know from A to B. 可惜的是，玛丽一字不识。

5. from A to Z 从字母表中的第一个字母A到最后一个字母Z，顾名思义指从头到尾、包括全部，因此其含义为：“自始至终”、“彻底地”。

—He knows the history of 20th century art from A to Z. 他谙熟20世纪艺术史。

—Stop telling a lie. I know the story from A to Z. 别再扯谎了，我知道事情的始末。

6. dot the i’s and cross the t’s 字母 i 上的那一点须要记得点上，而 t 上需划横线，含义为：“一丝不苟”、“重视细节”。做事谨慎的人总会注意到两者的区别，并牢记打点及划横线，此习语在口语中强调仔细、谨慎，又可表达为dot one’s i’s and cross one’s t’s。

—Whatever you do, please remember to dot the i’s and cross the t’s. 无论做什么事都须仔细谨慎。

7. double-O 英语字母 O 像只睁大的眼睛，而人睁大眼睛的目的是为了看得更加清楚，所以 double-O的意思就从两只睁大的眼睛引申为“细察”。

—While opening the door, she gave the man outside with helmet the double-O. 打开门，她仔细端详门口那个戴头盔的男人。

8. mind one’s/your p’s and q’s 此习语有时亦作watch one’s p’s and q’s，其中p’s and q’s还常写成P’s 和Q’s。在英语字母中，p和q因外形相似，常被借用来提醒他人“谨言慎行”或“小心行事”。

据说，该习语源自英国小学教师之口。英国小学生学习字母时，教师常提醒孩子们“Mind your p’s and q’s!” ，避免拼写时混淆。因为p和q在字母表里紧挨在一起，对年纪小的初学者来说极其容易把p和q弄混。另外，也有人说该习语源于印刷行业。带小尾巴的p和q形状颇似，工人在排字时，一不留神就会混淆，因此老师傅经常告诫徒弟们要特别注意。无论哪种说法，该词词义均引申为“做事要小心谨慎”。

—Whenever there is a test, our headmaster always says, “Mind your p’s and q’s, boys and girls.” 每当有考试的时候，我们班主任总会提醒我们要小心谨慎。

9. like Q in the corner 在打字机键盘上，字母Q位于左上角很不显眼的地方，而Q又是26个字母中不可缺少的一员，因此，此习语含义为：“不被重视又不可缺少”。

—It seems nobody pays attention to Tom，but he is like Q in the corner in our company．看起来好像没人注意汤姆，但我们公司少了他还真不行。

10. on the QT“秘密地”、“私下地”。QT是quiet的缩写。

—Why did the secretary throw away his application form on the QT? 为什么秘书偷偷地把他的申请表扔掉？

11. to a T “精确地”、“毫厘不差地”、“恰好”。它经常活用为fit/suit sb. to a T/t（合适）。

—I answered the question to a T, which shocked all of the people at present. 我恰如其分地回答了该问题，震惊了所有在场的人。

—The new dress fits/suits you to a T. 那件新衣服简直是为你量身定做的。

12. the three R’s “基本三会”（初等教育基础的读、写、算），三个R’s分别为reading、 (w)riting和(a)rithmetic。

— When I was a young child in school, I had to learn the three R's. 小时候上学的时候，我必须要学习基本三会。

13. catch/get some Z’s “小睡一下”。此习语用在美国英语口语中，因为美语里z的发音好像是呼呼大睡的拟声词。

—At one critical moment during the game, the TV camera panned to the bleachers and showed a fan catching some Z’s. 球赛到紧要关头时，电视镜头移到了看台上，拍到一位球迷正在呼呼大睡。
