中学英语课本出现了这样的问句：What about the one next to it? 这一特殊问句简洁、上口、易懂。从句法加以分析，句子成分有所省略（完整句是：What do you think about the one next to it?）。汉语中也不乏此类省略型的问句，如以“上哪？”取代“您上哪儿去？”。英语日常会话中，一些特殊问句已约定俗成地形成固定的省略句型。现将此类句型简介于下。

一、How / What about …? = How / What do you think (about) …?

此句型常用以征求意见、询问消息或提出建议。如：

Of course I'll come, what about Friday ?

我肯定会来，星期五怎么样？

What about that man we talked about this morning ?

我们今天上午谈的那人怎么样？

How about going out for a walk ?

出去散散步好吗？

二、Why (not) …? = Why should you (not) …?

此句型既可用于肯定形式又可用于否定形式，肯定形式可表示不解、不满甚至对对方间接的批评，而否定形式则往往是一种提出建议的方法。如：

Why bother with going downtown at all ?

究竟为什么要到商业区去呢？

Why turn off the gas ?

为什么要把煤气关掉？

Why not have a try ?

为什么不试一下呢？

三、What if … = What will (would) be the result if … ? 这是一个含条件状语从句的问句。

What if the rumor is true ?

如果谣言是真的，那将会怎么样？

What if we move the picture over here? Do you think it'll look better ?

我们把画移到这里来怎么样？是不是看上去好一点？

四、What though …? = What does it matter if …? 这是一个含让步状语从句的问句。

What though we are poor ?  We still have each other.

穷酸什么？只要你还有我，我还有你。

What though the battle be (或is) lost? We can fight again.

输了算什么？可以再战。

What though it's raining ?

下雨又有什么关系呢？

五、How come …? = How can it be that …? 此句型常用以表示对某事的诧异或是惊讶。

How come they left you alone in the dark ?

他们怎么会让你一个人呆在黑暗中？

How come John is not going with you?

约翰怎么会没有和你们一块儿去？

六、What of …?

此句型有以下三种不同的含义：

1. = What do you think of …? (即What about …?)

2. = What became (becomes, has become) of …? 用以询问某事或某物后来的情况。

What of the trees we planted in 1978 ?

3. = What does …matter? 表示对某事（物）的蔑视。

What of the danger?  危险算什么？

What of it?  这有什么关系？
