因动词而生色的句子

本文欲与读者“共欣赏”选自中学英语课本的两个句子。

一、He received it with a smile, and then as he looked at the note, his smile froze.

译文：他微笑着把钞票接过去。接着，当他看着那张钞票的时候，笑容一下子僵住了。

原句含隐喻（metaphor, compressed simile）。从修辞效果加以分析，隐喻可分为两类，即live metaphor (活的隐喻) 及dead metaphor (死的隐喻)。his smile froze一句属于后者。freeze一词的这种用法很频繁，已失去其新意。它的引申义已被收入辞书。Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English (p.449) 对freeze一词的释义之一即：to (cause to) stop suddenly or become quite still or unable to show any feeling。所附例句多达四句。在英美文学作品中，freeze的这种用法也不为鲜见。如：

1/ Just then the front door slammed again. They froze.

2/ I stand there —— froze.

我们有这样的体会：英语中的所谓dead metaphor 对于以汉语为母语的读者来说很可能新意溢出，而成了live metaphor。his smile froze即是一例。汉语无此暗喻，我们大可对此玩味咀嚼一番。汉译“笑容一下子僵住了”已无懈可击，但毕竟无以挽留原句的神韵。我们联想若是丰富一点，freeze一词有此妙用，别的有关自然现象的动词是否也可用于暗喻呢？回答是肯定的。如：

3/ Congratulations snowed in.

贺电纷至沓来。

4/ He stormed out of the classroom. 

他怒气冲冲地走出了教室。

二、The people who had gathered around gasped at the cruelty of the order.

译文：聚集在周围的人听到这残暴的命令都倒抽了一口凉气。

与句1恰成对照，此句子中的gasped能“等值”地译成“倒抽了一口凉气”。句中的gasp的含义是：take in a short, quick breath with the mouth open because of surprise。若以were surprised取代gasped，原句亦能达意，却失之空泛，难令读者如闻其声，如见其状。

人的表情神态往往是其心态的“晴雨表”。为谋求形象表达，英汉两种语言不仅在以实写虚的表现手法上颇为一致，而且在描写手笔上也彼此吻合。如：

1/ She made a face when she saw the pile of work. 

看见这么一大堆活，她做了个鬼脸。

2/ The traitor was spat at by the people.

叛徒遭到人们的唾弃。

有趣的是，英语及汉语中个别动作所传达的心理竟然是截然相反的。试类比：

3/ Mary said that the film was not a good one. I shook my head.

玛丽说，这部电影并不好看。我点了点头。
