Mr. Liao Xinbo, the Speaker, took his medical team composed of 111
health workers from Guangdong province and rushed to Chengdu by
charter plane in the fastest way the second day after the 5.12
devastating earthquake in Wenchuan in 2008. They trudged their way
through in the aftershocks, walking, sometimes even rolling and
crawling, to the epicenter-Yingxiu town of Wenchuan county. He and
his team stayed there for 22 days until the first makeshift
hospital was completed.
For this presentation, He will share with you his personal
experience in Wenchuan and tell you his real story: how he was
entrusted with this mission at this critical moment, how he and his
team struggled in the “death valley”, carried out the rescue effort
in the rubbles, rescued themselves in the ruins and risked their
lives to get to Gengda village. From these five stories, he will
elaborate more on the issue of disaster medicine and lessons he has
got from that.
He warned us: the disaster has not
yet come to an end. If we could draw up the lessons, start to make
it a topic of academic research, thinking about what we have missed
out and failed to do in our rescue efforts, to provide valuable
experience for future disasters, our blood will not shed in vain
and our sweat and our tears will be paid off. We should take this
hard-to-forget experience as a book that we should read with all
our heart and mind.
