Montana’s National Parks

Montana hosts Yellowstone and Glacier national parks, in addition to 54 state parks.

The U.S. National Park System has been labeled “America’s best idea.” Whether or not you agree with that label, the fact remains that the concept of protecting land for public use took root in Yellowstone National Park.

Established in 1871 as the first U.S. national park, Yellowstone, with its breathtaking landscapes, has remained untouched for 140 years. Though it is primarily located within Wyoming, its 9,000 square kilometers of natural beauty stretch into neighboring Idaho and Montana. Yellowstone holds 67 species of mammals, 290 waterfalls and one active volcano.

But Yellowstone isn’t Montana’s only national park. Established in 1910, Glacier National Park is located in the northwestern portion of Montana along the Canadian border. Nicknamed the “Crown of the Continent,” this park features lush forests, alpine meadows and rugged peaks. It is home to nearly 70 species of mammals and 270 species of birds.

Both Yellowstone and Glacier national parks are recognized as UNESCO World Heritage sites. In addition to these national parks, Montana also maintains 54 state parks.
