Giuseppe Castiglione, an Italian who came to China to do missionary work as a friar of the Society of Jesus in the 54^th year of emperor Kangxi’s reign in the Qing Dynasty, got courteous reception by emperor Kangxi. So he entered the palace and became court painter and once participated in the design of European Palaces in the Old Summer Palace. He was an official in the reign of emperor Kangxi, emperor Yongzheng and emperor Qianlong.
