Step1 Warming up  

Activity 1

Listen to a song called Trouble Is A Friend, and ask students:

In which language is it sung?

Besides in songs, where can we hear English?

(on the radio, on the bus, on the phone, at the airport and so on)

Where can we see English?

(on a T-shirt, a notebook, in the magazines, newspapers, films, on the Internet and so on)

Which countries can speak English?

(Canada, the USA, England, Ireland, and many other countries.)

According to the three answers, we know that English is a common language in our life and an international language in the world.

Activity 2

New words: learn some key new words according to the context and pictures (own, essential, quarter).

Do you want to know how English has become an international language? After today’s reading, you can get the answer.

Step 2 Skimming

Listen to the tape and read the passage quickly then match the main idea.

Listen to the song Chinese by S.H.E, and see some pictures such as Confucius’ Institute, Chinese Bridge, and some foreigners who can speak Chinese, such as Da Shan. All these tell us Chinese becomes more and more popular and important in the world. Are you proud of it?

Debate Divide students into two groups. Work in groups, discuss with your group members, and have a debate about Whether Chinese one day will replace English as the international language.
