12.4 Fix Your Face Angle (保持杆面角)

If your putter-face is not square to your Aim-line at impact, you have a serious putting problem. So addition to your face-angle error, you must be making at least one compensation to counteract it. The problem and its compensation developed together, so it’s best to get rid of them together.

击球时的杆面与瞄准线没能保持方正,这是一个大问题,而且为了抵消这个问题,下意识至少会做出一个补偿动作,这更增加了问题的严重。问题和问题所带来的补偿动作是共生共长的,最好把它们一起摆脱。

*** The Simple Tru-Putt(一个简单的测试)

The easiest way to determine whether or not you are habitually making an in-swing face-angle correction during your stroke is with the Tru-putt. Position your putter square to the end of the Tru-putt and make a stroke. If your putter returns to square at impact, the way it was address, the Tru-putt will slide straight across the floor along the line perpendicular to your putter-face (your Aim-line). If, however, your stroke comes into impact with a face angel adjustment relative the way you aligned it at address, the Tru-putt will tell you by rotating off the putter-face and turning to one side or the other.

My recommendation is that you practice with the Tru-putt between three and five minutes twice a week, making your 6-, 12-, and 18-inch reference backswing strokes until you start producing straight-sliding rather than rotating Tru-putt. Finish each session by a few really long putts and a few very short ones.

我建议用Tru-putt,每周测试二次,每次3-5分钟。6英寸,12英寸和18英寸的上杆高度,直到能把Tru-putt推直。每次都要推几个长推和几个短推。

*** Putter Rails (推杆围栏)

Another good way to groove a non-compensating stroke with a good face angle at impact is to drill indoors with Putter Rails in the Putting Track. But don’t do this until you’re comfortable putting in the Putting Track without the rails. Start with the sides of the track spread far enough so you hit them no more than about half the time, the decrease the spacing as you improve. Stroke 50 putts per night, using all the same guidelines for careful practice mentioned in section 12.1 for improving your stroke path.

When you first start using the Putter Rails, it will feel as if they are helping you hold your putter-face square down the line. Close your eyes on every other stroke so you feel the square-face motion throughout your stroke path, all the way to the finish, and be sure to hold your finish for five beats of the metronome.

*** Success Breeds Success (成功法则)

Each time your no-touch Putter Rail success reaches 80 percent, tighten the track spacing and continue to play this drill. By the time you reach 80 percent success level and there’s only one inch of total space between the Rails and the Track, you should be seeing a major improvement in your putting. And you can be confident that every good practice you make in the Track with the Putter Rails is a stroke you can produce on the course under pressure – because, at the same time, you’ve also been grooving your ritual and rhythm, and committing control of your putting stroke mechanics to your subconscious.

当围栏的撞击率下降到20%时,调小推杆轨道的间距,然后继续练习。如果能够在轨道与围栏的总距离只有一英寸的标准下撞击率保持在20%以下,推杆的进步已经非常大了,可以相信自己在实际场地有压力的情况之下,也能推出这样稳定的推杆了。在做这项练习的同时,routine和仪式也要同时进行,让下意识也同时得到锻炼和巩固。

*** Putter Straw(推杆秆子)

You can further work on face-angle improvement outdoors, this time on the practice putting green, with Putter Straw. It’s a good idea to intersperse this outdoor Putter Straws with Elevated Aim-line practice with your indoor Putter Rail practice sessions.

Putter Straws are a feedback mechanism we developed to convince golfers of the relationship between their putter-face angle and their hands and forearms. With one straw on the back of my left hand and two straws on my putter-face, it’s easy to see this relationship when I look down and rotate my left forearm. Unless you let go of the grip, there will always be a consistent relationship between your left hand and forearm and your putter-face.

还有一种室外练习杆面方正的方法:推杆秆子。推杆秆子是一种反馈装置,反映推杆的杆面与手、手臂的关系。拉上高架瞄准线,练习方式类同与推杆围栏。

一根在左手的手背上,另外两根在推杆杆面上。当转动左小臂时,能清晰地看到他们之间的对应关系。除非手从握把移开,否则总是能通过推杆杆子看到左手、左臂与杆面的关系。

1.       Strap a straw to your forearm or back of your left hand.

2.       Stick the Putter Straw gizmo on your putter-face.

3.       Find a dead-straight, 6-to-10 feet putt.

4.       Install an elevated Aim-line from two feet behind your ball to over the hole.

5.       Putt until you can keep the straws straddling the Elevated Aim-line on your backswing and follow-through.

6.       Hold each finish for five count of your body-rhythm cadence. If you miss the Aim-line with the straws, correct them to straddle the Aim-line and hold them there for five counts.

1.       把一根秆子绑在手臂或者是手背上。

2.       把秆子按在推杆杆面上。

3.       6-10英尺的直线推杆。

4.       在球后2英尺的地方拉一条高架瞄准线至洞后。

5.       练习推杆,直到杆面上的秆子能在上杆和下杆时骑在瞄准线的两侧。

6.       hold住送杆,如果发现送杆后,秆子不能骑在瞄准线的两侧,调整成骑线的状态,并保持送杆动作。

Practice only straight putts until you can keep the Putter straw aligned on the Aim-line at the end of your strokes 80 percent of the time. Then try a breading putt. Start with your Putter Straws set at the standard tolerance until your reach the 80 percent rate. Proceed through the pro level until you get to 80 percent, and then change the super-pro spacing.

先练习直线推杆,直到80%的送杆都能让秆子均衡骑在线上,然后开始有“线”的推杆。刚开始时,把杆面上的两个秆子的距离设定为标准,如果达到80%的正骑率,就可以调小秆子之间的距离,直到超级。这个与教师夹的使用是一样的原理。

*** Truth-board (真理板)

The final step in your elimination of putter-face rotation should be use of the Truth-broad, and aluminum ramp that is dead-flat so a putt can roll dead-straight o it. When your putt is struck with a square face angle, the ball will roll straight up the ramp and into the hole. If your face angle is bad at impact, the ball will roll off-line and miss the hole.

Set up the Truth-broad with the hole at full size, and level the board. Install toe-line tape to make sure you stand the correct distance from the ball, set your metronome to beep at your natural body-rhythm cadence, and use your preview stroke and ritual before every putt.

最后一个能保持杆面角的方法:真理板。一块铝制的绝对平整的坡道,以保证球的直线滚动。如果击球杆面是方正的,球就能滚入洞,反之,就偏离而错过洞口。

一开始,设定标准洞口宽度,调整板至水平,在自己的站位前贴上趾线标识确保自己与球之间的距离合适,打开节拍器,在每一次推击前,试推并做完仪式。

1.       Putt 30 putts per session until you make all 30 in a row.

2.       Putt 30 putts each session, rolling every other putt with your eyes closed, listening for the double click, stay in stage 2until you hole 30 in row.

3.       After making 30 in a row, 15 with your eyes close, add pro hole reducers to make the target less than three inches wide. Putt at the pro level until you make 30 in a row, every other on with your eyes close.

4.       Add super-pro hole reducers, making the hole smaller still. When you make 30 in row, half with your eyes closed, your three-foot stroke will be PGA Tour-quality. Once you achieve stage 4 super-pro ability, only periodic maintenance will be required thereafter.

Face-angle error compensations take the longest to correct. When you see how much feedback helps, you may wonder why you were wasting your time in the past practice on a putting green without really knowing what was wrong or how to fix it. Practice without feedback is a waste of time.

1、每组30个球,直到连续推进30个球。

2、每组30个球,每隔一个闭着眼睛推,听落洞的声音,直到连续推进30个球。

3、完成了以上两组,让洞口小于3英寸,然后继续练习,隔一个闭上眼睛,直到连续推进30个。

4、让洞口更小,继续隔一个闭上眼睛推,如果能连续完成30个,那么你的3英尺的推杆已经到了PGA 巡回赛水平了。一旦到了这个水平,就仅仅需要隔一段时间复习一下这个练习就可以了。

击球时杆面转动的问题是个顽疾,练习一定要有辅助设备提供反馈,让自己练的明白和有结果。没有反馈的练习简直就是浪费时间。

12.5 Retrain Your Power Source (动力)

*** Retrain Your Muscles to be Quiet (有些肌肉必须旁观)

 By working on putting in your natural body rhythm, you also are working on not putting with the muscles of your hands, fingers, and wrists.

按着身体的节律,听着节拍器推杆,要确保手,手指和手腕不要成为推杆的力源。

*** Head Motion (头不动)

Your head should not move during your putting stroke. If it does, particularly if it moves in the opposite direction that your putter moves, work on the “hair drill”.

Stand facing a wall with the toe of your putter about half an inch from the baseboard and your hair just touching the wall (but don’t rest your head against the wall). Execute your ritual and a putting stroke, hitting a ball if you like, but it’s not necessary. If your head moves during the stroke, you’ll feel your hair brushing the wall. Spend a few minutes a day for several weeks putting this way and you’ll learn the feeling of not moving your head during the stroke. (If you don’t have enough hair to provide a good feedback, wear a soft hat).

You can also get head-motion feedback outdoors by making putting strokes while watching your shadow. Find a reference object that won’t move and stand so your shadow falls next to it. Then you’ll be able to see any head movement during your stroke.

推杆的过程中,头不能动,尤其是不能向杆头行进相反的方向动。头发练习能解决这个问题。

面墙而立,杆趾离贴脚线半英寸,头发触到墙而不是头顶着墙。然后仪式、推杆,有球没球都可以。在推杆过程中,如果头移动了,就能听到头发刷墙的声音。连着几个星期,每天几分钟做这个练习,直到学会在推杆过程中不移动头。头发少的球手,可以戴一顶软帽。

也可以在室外在有阳光的日子,通过看投影来判断头是否移动。找到一个不移动的参照物,选择站的位置,让自己的影子刚好在参照物的边上。然后就可以看到自己的头是否在推杆时移动了。

*** Body Motion (身体不动)

Body motion is harmful because it influences the putter’s face angle. Your upper body, shoulders, arms, hands, and putter are all taking a free ride on your lower body, so when your hips rotate everything above them rotates. If you have this problem or suspect that your hips rotate or slide as you putt, practice putting with your hips against a doorjamb.

推杆时动身体是很糟糕的事,因为这会改变杆面角度。如果胯部转动了,那么身体的上部也乘势转动。觉得自己有这个问题或者有这个趋势,可以让胯顶着门框推杆。

Here’s a way to solve all of your lower-body motion problems, but it will work only if you have a good imagination and react to visualization. Stand over a putt and imagine that you lower body-from feet to hips-is inside a barrel filled with cement. Then imagine that the cement has hardened solid as a rock. If this image is vivid enough, you won’t be able to move your low body when you putt. Try this on a practice green and I’ll bet you leave the first putt short.

如果你有足够的想象力并且身体会对所想的产生反应,下面这个方法可以一试。

站在推杆的球前,想象自己站在一个装满了水泥的大桶中,而且水泥固化变硬如岩石,如果这个生动的想象起作用了,下盘在推杆时肯定就不会动了。如果在真实果岭上,这么做的时候,第一杆肯定会推短。

*** Balance Board (平衡板)

If your hips slide forward or away from the hole during the stroke, try making putting strokes while standing on a balance board, keeping it balanced so neither end hits the floor. The balance board doesn’t teach a motionless lower body, but it strengthens the muscles that influence balance. Stepping off the board after just five minutes’ work, the balance muscles in your legs will be quivering and tired but your lower body will feel solid as you stand on the ground. If you use the balance board over a period of time, your lower-body stability on the putting green will be greatly enhanced. You can make your own balance board, attach the rod about 55percent of the way to one end. Then stand on it with the small side toward your target as you stroke your putts.

如果胯部在推杆时有左右前后摆动的问题,试试在平衡板上推杆。设法平衡,让板的两侧都不要碰到地板。平衡板不是练习下盘不动,是训练那些保持下盘稳定的肌肉。在板上练习推杆五分钟后下来,大腿保持平衡的肌肉会抖动和疲乏,但是你会发觉,重新站立在地面的你感到下盘稳定了,如果坚持练习一段时间,那么在场上的下盘稳定性将会极大提高。自己就可以做这块板,下面支撑的小棍不要在板的中心位置, 55%-45%的样子,然后站在上面练习推杆,板稍稍向目标方向倾斜。

*** Eliminate Wrist Collapse(保持手腕不动)

Changing wrist angles through impact causes face rotation and putts to start left of the intended line. This happens as power is being supplied to the ball by the wrist muscles, and happens most severely if the right forearm is over-powering the left arm at the same time. It is possible to make a slight hinge of the wrists, without affecting either the power or roll direction but anything more than that becomes a “power hinge”, certain to hit putts left of the target under pressure. Here are two ways to counter it.

推杆过程中的手腕动作产生的力量会改变杆面角,导致球偏左,如果再加上右臂的强势,情况就更糟。手腕是联动轴,轻微的联动是不会影响力量和球的滚动方向的,但是如果成了力量轴,就会在压力之下把球拉左。有两个办法可以一试。

=== Pendulum Filler (钟摆板)

Wearing such a device during any of the drills discussed in this chapter will allow you to feel the motion of a solid pendulum stroke, after a few sessions, you will begin to forget you have the Putt Triangle between your arms. A sure way to accomplish this is to combine this practice with sessions featuring the Track and the Truth-board, being sure to make your strokes to the cadence and rhythm of your metronome.

在练习这一章提到的各种训练时,双臂之间夹入钟摆板,能让球手感受完整的钟摆,训练一段时间后,你会忘了手臂间还有个钟摆板。钟摆板最好是和推杆轨道,真理板结合在一起配合节奏来练习推杆。

=== Left-Hand-Low Grip (左手在下握杆)

The best way right-handed golfers can stop their right-hand wrist from supplying unwanted power to the stroke-as they usually do when they break down the left wrist-is to use the left-hand-low-clamp grip.

Place your lead had below the trailing hand on your grip, this moves the trailing hand from a position of power to one of submission during the stroke, meaning it won’t control either the power or direction of your putt if it tries to add any adrenaline-aided power. This position also eliminates the tendency for the trailing hand to force the wrist of the lead hand to break down and pull putts.

对于惯用右手的球手来说,让右手腕不再强势地影响左手腕的办法是左手在下握杆。把左手放在右手的下面,这让右手在推杆时从强势变为从属,即使在场上右手有了“情绪力量”,也不能改变推杆的力度和方向,同时也不会影响左手的正常动作
