瓜分灵魂

在一个小镇的郊区，有一个墓地。墓地的栅栏内有一棵又大，又老的山核桃树。

有一天，两个男孩装满了一桶山核桃，坐在树旁，开始分桶里的坚果。在栅栏外，无法看到他俩的身影。

“一个给你，一个给我。一个给你，一个给我，”一个男孩在数着。

有几个山核桃又从树上掉了下来，滚到了栅栏边。

这时，另有一个男孩骑着自行车，沿着栅栏外的路行驶过来。当他经过时，觉得有声音从墓地里传来。他放慢了车速，想探个究竟。

果然，他听到了：“一个给你，一个给我。一个给你，一个给我。”

他立即反应过来那是什么。

“哦，天哪。”他浑身发抖地说，“是撒旦和上帝在墓地里瓜分灵魂。”

他跳上自行车，离开了墓地。

在拐弯处，他遇到了一位拄着拐杖，蹒跚而行的老人。

“快过来。”男孩说， “你不会相信我听到了什么！撒旦和上帝正在墓地里瓜分灵魂。”

老男人说：“走开，孩子。你难道看不出来，我走路很困难吗？”

在男孩的坚持下，老男人一瘸一拐地走到墓地。

他们站在栅栏边，听到有人说：“一个给你，一个给我。一个给你，一个给我。”

老人低声说：“孩子，看来你说的是真话。让我们看看，我们能不能见到上帝本人。”

尽管他俩吓得浑身发抖，但还是透过栅栏往墓地里看。不过，什么也看不见。老人和男孩紧紧地抓住栅栏的铁条，试图能瞥见上帝。

最后，他们听到了：“一个给你，一个给我。一个给你，一个给我。”后面还跟了一句，“全分完了。现在，去把栅栏边的那两个疯子抓过来，我们就可以结束了。”

结果怎样？那老男人比骑自行车的男孩整整快了5分钟就回到了镇上。

注：双关语。英语的“Nut”作名词时，有“坚果”的意思，也有“疯子、怪人”的意思。两个男孩最后的那句话“Now let's go get those nuts by the fence，and we’ll be done。”本意是“现在，去把滚到栅栏边的那些山核桃捡回来，我们就可以结束了。”但在骑自行车男孩和老男人的耳里，听起来就像是“现在，去把栅栏边的那两个疯子抓过来，我们就可以结束了。”因为，他们事先并不知道，有几颗山核桃从树上掉下来，滚到了栅栏边这件事。

原文： Counting Souls

On the outskirts of a small town，there was a big，old pecan tree just inside the cemetery fence。

One day two boys filled up a bucketful of nuts and sat down by the tree，out of sight，and began dividing the nuts。

“One for you，one for me。One for you，one for me。”said one boy。

Several dropped and rolled down toward the fence。Another boy came riding along the road on his bicycle。As he passed，he thought he heard voices from inside the cemetery。

He slowed down to investigate。Sure enough，he heard：“One for you，one for me。One for you，one for me。”

He just knew what it was。

“Oh my。”he shuddered，“it's Satan and the Lord dividing the souls at the cemetery。”

He jumped back on his bike and rode off。

Just around the bend he met an old man with a cane，hobbling along。

“Come here quick。”said the boy，“You won't believe what I heard！Satan and the Lord are down at the cemetery dividing up the souls。”

The man said：“Beat it kid，can't you see it's hard for me to walk。”

When the boy insisted though，the man hobbled to the Cemetery。

Standing by the fence they heard：“One for you，one for me。One for you，one for me。”

The old man whispered：“Boy，you’ve been telling the truth。Let's see if we can see the Lord himself。”

Shaking with fear，they peered through the fence，yet were still unable to see anything。The old man and the boy gripped the wrought iron bars of the fence tighter and tighter as they tried to get a glimpse of the Lord。

At last they heard：“One for you，one for me。”

And one last：“One for you，one for me。That's all。Now let's go get those nuts by the fence，and we’ll be done。”

They say the old man made it back to town a full 5 minutes ahead of the boy on the bike。
