Zhang SanFeng 《 The Song of the Great Path 》

今洗耳聽吾言，道有先天與後天。後天渣質為無用，先天一點號真鉛。

Gentleman, please clean your ears, and listen. Dao has both innate and acquired. Unfortunately, the latter is sludge and not practical—the innate one who is the actual lead.

 

昧真鉛。迷本性，此是修行第一病。玉清殿上少人行。吾今指破神仙境。

The concealed actual lead can confuse one's personality. Therefore, it is the first illness in Dao practice. Only a few people step into the Jade Qing Temple. Now I expose the immortal land to you.

 

命要傳，性要悟，入聖超凡由汝做。靜功悟性動取藥，內有龜蛇顛倒縮。

Physical methods need instruction, and spiritual practices rely on realization. Therefore, it is up to you to overcome all worldly thoughts and enter sainthood. Static maneuver depends on self-realization, and the dynamic trick is for gathering elixir. Inside, tortoises and snakes are pulling back upside down.

 

一陽發動便行功，斡轉天關須猛烈。陰生在午陽坎中，卯酉行持要從容。

The action starts when one Yang is active. Turning and rotating the heavenly gate needs vigorous effort. The Yin generates from the middle of the noon Yang. The Mao You (cosmic) circulation requires gentle execution.

 

斗柄撥輪來紫府，笑迎仙子客黃公。黃婆宮中會奼女，奼女嬰兒自相配。

The bucket handle moves the wheel to reach the purple mansion. Here is to welcome the fairy and be the guest of the yellow senior. The yellow lady meets the young lady at the yellow chamber. The young lady and the infant perform matching themselves.

 

 

 

要築基，須煉己，煉純熟，明採取。蒙師指我一段功，先將九竅關門通。

Before building a foundation, one has to discipline oneself. One needs to practice proficiency and a complete understanding of the art of collecting. Thanks to my teacher who teaches me the art of Dao. First, the nine body orifices need to open.

 

九竅原在尾閭穴，先從腳底湧泉衝。湧泉衝起漸至膝，膝下功夫須著力。

The nine body orifices situate at the coccyx.  In the beginning, the Qi punches through the YongQuan (湧泉).  From YongQuan rushes gradually to the knee.  The training below the knee needs a lot of effort.

 

釋氏即此號蘆芽，又如蟲行又如刺。過膝徐徐至尾閭，有如硬物來相抵。

Sakyamuni named this the Luya (蘆芽). It feels like the cranking of the worms or the stings of thorns. It passes the knee to the coccyx.  It feels like pushing by a solid mass.

 

方行最上一切功，三段功夫有口訣。從此三關一撞開，泥丸頂上轉將來。

Then one can start practicing all the upper part exercises.  There are oral secret codes to the three stages of exercise. Once the three gateways are pushed open, at the top of NiWan (Head) will turn into the future.

 

金鎖關穿下鵲橋，重樓十二真奇哉！重樓即名絳宮室。絳宮黃庭有端的。

Piercing through the golden lock reaches the magpie bridge.  The twelve-level pagoda is magical.  The twelve-level pagoda is also called the chamber of Jiang Gong (絳宮).  There are ends to Jiang Gong and the yellow hall (黃庭HuangTien).

 

黃庭一室須要精，精在中間一點靈。切莫糊塗為隱秘，黃庭便是真玄關。

The yellow hall needs the spirit. There is a bright seed inside it. Don't be confused or secretive. The yellow court is the actual mystery gate.

 

 

 

 

不識玄關端的處，真鉛來來何處安？君不見《悟真》詩，須憑玄牝立根基。

If you don't know the location of the mystery gate, where can one place the gathered actual lead？Gentleman, don't you see the poem Wu-Zhen( 悟真）says "you must build a foundation on Hsuan( 玄mystery) and Pin( 牝female animal).

 

真精既返黃金室，一顆明珠永不離。又不見《參同》詩：狀似蓬壺比不誣。

The brilliant pearl will never leave when the true essence returns to the golden room. The book Tsan Tung Chi(參同契）also says, "it is no doubt that its shape like the Peng Hu ( 蓬壺shape like gourd).

 

下閉稱無上閉有，兩孔穴法氣相須。從今講道談玄理，除此為之都是虛。

There is none when the below shuts, and when the above closes, there is.

These two-cavity methods rely on Qi. Now, we talk about the logic of Dao.

Besides this, all others are bogus

 

關巳開，功已積，制劍要明真消息。莫邪尚且鐵為之，何況我劍本來直。

When all the gates open and all efforts accumulate, the timing of forging a sword needs to know. The famous sword Mo- Ye(莫邪）needs iron to forge. How about my sword originally is straight?

 

天為爐，地為冶，金水相停切莫野。子午行功要鑄成，能剛能柔能取舍。

The sky acts as the furnace, and the earth is for smelting. So don't be upset when both metal and water stop working. It needs vigorously tilling at midnight and noon to forge it out. It can be rigid or soft and can give or take.

 

劍已全，採真鉛，採取鴻濛未判先。若還採得後天氣，只是將他命卻延。

When the sword is ready, it is time to pick up the actual lead. It needs to harvest before the primordial and the unjudged. If one collects only the postnatal Qi, one can be only able to linger or lengthen one's life span.

 

 

二七時，有真機，神州赤縣當求之。法財兩用若求得，就好切思細詳別。

At the time of the two sevens, there is a real opportunity. It is time to seek it at the divine country or the sacred county. If you already know the secret codes and have sufficient wealth, it is time for you to consider desolate from others seriously.

 

粉紅雲，野雞色，唇若塗朱膚似雪。聰明智慧性溫良，神光漆珠髮純黑。

It is beautiful as the pink cloud or the pheasant colors. The lips cover with lipstick, and the skin appears like snow. They are wise, intelligent, gentle, and wise. Their appearance shows radiance, bright eyes, and dark hair.

 

氣清視正步行端，方用中間算年月。五千四百生黃道，杳杳冥冥生恍惚。

Their gesture shows elegance, sharp vision, and proper gait. Finally, it is time to calculate the month and the year. The five thousand forty-eight creates the ecliptic. Dim and dusky leads into a trance.

 

依時採取定浮沉。不可毫厘令過越。此際須明三日弦，妙在西方庚辛白。

The exact collection time determines the state of float or sink. Therefore, it is prudent not to miss the timing. At this moment, it is crucial to understand the third waxing crescent. It is terrific due to the white Geng Xin ( 庚辛metal) on the west side.

 

慧劍靈，內心誠，敲竹相通始鼓琴。天梯宜用不可缺，密密深機那個能！

The intelligent sword is quick. The inner intention is sincere. First, it is to beat the bamboo to resonate, then to play the drum and the zither. The sky ladder is valuable and necessary. Who can know this profound secret?

 

海底巨鰲休亂釣，恐驚去了不回程。爐莫損，候要別，採過後天延歲月。

Don't fish recklessly for the colossal turtle at the bottom of the ocean, lest they are afraid and not returning. But, on the other hand, don't damage the furnace, and the timing needs to be differentiated. The collection of postnatal brings only lengthening of years or months.

 

 

一個時辰分六候，只於二候金丹就，尚餘四候有神功，妙在心傳難洩漏。

One Shi-Chen(時辰 Lunar Hour）divides into six Hou（候-one Hou is 20minutes), and the Jin-Dan ( Golden Elixir) occurs at the first two Hou(s), and the remaining four Hou(s) possess magic power.

 

真鉛來，發神火，西到東來先覓我。運我真汞一點紅，相迎相邁成一顆。

The actual lead comes, the God's fire (神火Shen-Huo)ignites. It comes from the west to the east to fetch for me. I mobilize a red spark from my true mercury. The true mercury welcomes and receives the actual lead to form into one.

 

過三關，升泥丸，下得重樓入廣寒。又不癡，又不慧，又不醒兮又不醉。

It passes through the three gates and reaches the Ni-Wan (the pineal gland). Then, it passes through the story pagoda and reaches the Guang-Han (the moon palace or solar plexus). One becomes not silly, not intelligent, not aware, and yet not drunk.

 

若非遍體使精神，怎得夫妻成匹配？丹既定，心喜辛，屯蒙兩卦朝昏應。

If the whole body is not full of essence and spirit, how can husband and wife match each other? The Dan(elixir) establishes, and the heart is joyful. The two Gua (卦-divinatory trigram) of Tun（屯 ）and Meng (蒙 ）symbolize morning and evening.

 

也知沐浴在其中，卯酉之時不宜進。守城垣，罷戰功，增得靈砂滿鼎紅。

It knows that Mayu (沐浴bathe)is in it. Don't advance at the time of Mao-You( 卯酉-February and August). It is time to guard the castle walls and ceases fire. The tripod will fill with mysterious cinnabar and becomes reddish.

 

如斯十月功夫足，器皿丹房一撒空。入深山，抱元一，萬事俱空不費力。

If one practices for ten whole months, one can discard all the equipment and utensils. One can live in solitude in the mountain. One embraces oneness, and everything else is vacuous and effortless.

 

 

寒暑飢勞不可侵。巍巍九載面牆壁。朝來北海暮瀛洲，忽然功行齊完日。

One will not affect by hot and cold, labor and hunger. If one can meditate facing the wall for nine years, one can reach the north sea in the morning and Ying-Zhou ( holy mountain 蓬萊瀛洲）at dusk. Then, suddenly, the final day of accomplishment arrives.

 

水府三官算壽年，一封丹書下瑤天，青鸞白鶴舞脯翻。直至通明封拜罷，

The three officers of the Water Palace calculate the longevity span. A Daoist decree comes from the eternal heaven. The Qing-Luan (鸞-a ethical bird like the Phoenix) and the white cranes dance elegantly. It lasts until the whole solemn inauguration is over.

 

永作長生不老仙。

One will exist as an immortal forever.
