3. amount, total ,sum, number
辨析这几个同义词，主要是在两个词义上进行辨析，表示“总数、总额”之意时，在amount,
total, sum, number之间辨析；表示“数量上很多许多”时，在amount, number之间辨析。
我们先看下面的句子：
1) The (total) amount of money paid to the city last month reached $ three billion .
2)The (total) number of people present at the meeting last night reached 30,000.
从上两句，我们至少可以归纳如下：
表达“总数”之意时，amount总是和不可数名词搭配，如money, water, food等等；number
则总是和可数名词搭配，如people, book, country等，表示“什么什么的总数”。二者意思完全一
样，差异主要体现在语法上对用法的规定有所不同而已。
表示“总数”时，不论amount或number，均可加total，或不加，意思不变。
还是上述两句话，我们来看total使用：
The money in total paid to the city last month reached $ three billion.
The people in total present at the meeting last night reached 30,000.
A total of $ three billion was paid to the city last month.
A total of 30,000 people were present at the meeting last night.
对于total表示“总数、总额”的用法，我们至少可以归纳出下面几点：
1）total表示“总数、总额”时，既可以与不可数名词搭配，又可以与可数名词搭配；
2）total可以分别以in total和a total of的短语形式出现，表示“总数、总额”
sum：sum这个词只有一个意思，即“总金额”，因此当然也就总是和money连用。
注意它的语法用法，用a,the时的情况：
1）The sum/ The sum of money was $ 300.总金额三百。
2）I paid him a sum of $ 300.共支付他三百块。
表示“总金额”时，amount和sum可以互换，上面的sum均可换成amount，意思不变， the
sum of money = the amount of money。
要想表示“一共多少钱？”可以说：How much is it? What isthe sum (of money)? What is the
amount (of money)? 或What is the money in total？
amount,number均可表示“数量很多”，有一点仍然需要记住：amount只与不可数名词搭
配，number与可数名词搭配。
The amount of paperwork was great.案头工作堆如山。
The amount of energy was increasing.能量在增加。
A number of songs; a number of days,好多歌曲，好多天
total, sum, number之间辨析；表示“数量上很多许多”时，在amount, number之间辨析。
