孩子们眼中的学术英语

        我在北外青少英语的学术英语课程时间过半(9次课),正好因公外出,需要停课一周,我就让孩子们写一篇课程反思,我看看孩子们对这个课程的理解。下面选择了其中几篇。让我欣慰的是这个课程最初的设计不是学习英语(因为这些孩子的英语都达到了CAE的水平),而是学术思维的训练,这一点孩子们在他们的反思中都提到了这是他们的重要收获。

 

第一篇

CAE课程和AE课程似乎只差了一个字母。在这一个字母背后,有些长久不变的存在,也更有一些事物经历了极大的变动。

让我们从名字入手。

那缺失的“C”代表什么?Certificate。CAE课程大体上看是应试的(虽然它在根本上也与提升英语水平乃至某夏令营的体验活动密切相连),而AE课程则不然。虽然学术英语课最终会指向雅思,且其教学也是围绕雅思展开的,但它所涉及到的更多是一种思维方式。

这种思维方式究竟是什么?我们要到“A”中去寻找答案。A在前者中为“advanced”。这个铿锵有力的词直接指向那些高端的词汇、短语和句式——advanced English被李知非同学戏称为“高级哥特语”。在后者中,A则是“academic”的缩写。从advanced到academic,有何变化?我想,advanced只是语言(质料)上的,而academic则是思维(形式)上的。拥有了advanced English作为武器,我们便能学习如何用academic的方式思考。

于是,我们离开了考场,进入了一片广阔的新天地;我们登上高级的言语堆砌成的小山,并欲图攀爬那座学术思想垒出的高峰。

在考场中,等待我们的是试卷(略废话)。在小山上,迎接我们的是丰富的知识储备。而在新天地里,在高峰之巅外,是一座圣洁的殿堂——它或许拥有连接大学校园的密道。

我眼中的学术英语课程长什么样?祂是一棵巨树,拥有盘虬卧龙的根部,从英语的土壤中吸收养分。词汇是水,cohesive device是各类无机物。巨树的枝干就是语言储备和知识储备的所在地,它还保持着英语、知识和思想之间的畅通。树叶在太阳光(人类文明)的照耀下,通过从空气中摄取足够的二氧化碳(新知识、新话题),与水(英语)以及无机物(cohesive device)结合,利用光合作用生成氧气(雅思作文)和有机物(学术思维)。

有机物的结构是怎样的?它的基础应该是一个由几个气泡状物体构成的框架。在这晶莹剔透而毫不死板的框架中,流动着的是那股真理的清泉。这股清泉一旦按照框架的要求洒在纸上,便能形成一篇经典的雅思作文。在这灵思的清泉中,溶解着各种理据,以及一种伟大的品质——承认对手。然而,这种承认的动机不纯,因为它本质上是为论证己方观点而服务的(也就是温和的驳论)。

那种气泡状的框架又是什么?我的理解便是:一种句与句之间再清楚不过的关系。每一句话都能在作文的小宇宙中找到其存在的价值——“增之一分则嫌长、减之一分则嫌短,素之一忽则嫌白、黛之一忽则嫌黑!”。用恰当的语言撑起这大框架,则学术思维便得到了呈现。

CAE与学术英语,变的是思想,不变的仍是语言基础。然而思想其实一直是有的,只是没有刻意强调;语言基础也略有变化,只是比之前精密了一些……

 

第二篇

We have been following the step of captain Cao, an amazing tutor who contributes a lot to our progress in English, and I must say that it is totally enjoyable to do so. Besides, the aim of this report is to outline what changes and what remains in these two years, also emphasize my view towards academic English.

What remain

We have been taking Professor Cao’s course sine two years ago. The first thing remain is that her teaching is marvelous; from the wonderful PPT she prepared to the relaxing class, everything shoes that Professor Cao puts a great effort and knock herself out to make learning English a joy for us, and I must say thank you to her. Apart from that, the students hardworking is self evident [probably just except me] which is same as always. Except some are so busy that can not finished homework, nearly every other finish them. Moreover, the admiration and love for Professor Cao will still remain till the end of time……

What change

There are also something changed. The first one is our English level, from short sentences and two-syllable words to complex sentences, transitional markers etc. It is a huge leap for our English level. Another one is that our worldview, the way we think have changed [also except me] it has become more and more mature, for we do not just look at the surface of thing, but start thinking deeper, and none of these can be done except our fantastic Professor. Furthermore, we have formed a big family now, from boys who talk unstoppable, expressing their view towards the whole world to girls who do not even walk around, try very hard to learn more knowledge; inevitablely, we have kindergarteners who is so childish and funny and make lot of problems for Professor to solve [now I an the only one in this group.] we are friends who share everything.

Summary

Haven’t seen each other for so long. Thinking of the hilarious things we done together, so cried when writing, as a result, do not even know what I have said. [copying 前出师表]

Before having attending this AE course, what AE was in my point of view was extraordinarily simple: y’dunno know wat that academic English is? OMG! It sucks. LOL. Nerdy, perhaps. Y’can’t use any kinds of shorthands, no contractions. Neither slangs nor colloquial language are forbidden, guv’nor. I thought it should be the same way a scholar is speaking in, with a detailed scientific explanation including those gigantic words. However, after knowing more about AE, I now have understood that it is an attitude, a cautious, but rational attitude towards everything. It is the sense of justice, without any biased points of view, frankly saying that the results of my research support my hypothesis or not. With no over-generalisation involved, stating a truthful fact, yet still using the term “to some extent” to prevent potential issues and this, is what I have just learnt from this AE course.

自从本学期初进入学术英语的训练中来,我便在不断进步。这种进步与当初学习CAE时的长进,似乎异曲同工,却又有不少不同之处。它们主要分为以下几个方面:首先当然是英语能力。由于半年没有继续难度较大的CAE英语训练,我的英语水平自然有所下降。然而,学术英语课程让我重新熟悉了在CAE中见到过的一些高级词汇与语法,锻炼了我的语感,并且学会了一些新的词汇。其次是知识面。通过阅读一些英文报纸、观看英语演讲、寻找英文写作素材,我接触到了许多之前学习CAE时不知道的东西,增长了见识,开阔了自己的知识面。再说思维能力,可以说学术英语写作对于思维的锻炼很有帮助。经过一系列学术英语写作训练,我的思维比原来更严谨,发表议论时,头脑中条理清晰,能够以合理的方式表达心中所想。将我现在的essay与CAE时的文章相比,有点像将中学生的议论文与低年级小学生的“感想记录”作比较,思维能力的提升可见一斑。综上所述,从我个人所学看CAE与学术英语的共同点,在于包括难度的词汇和语法,不同点在于后者比前者多了一份新颖的知识和严谨的逻辑。我希望我能够继续努力,通过学术英语的训练习得更多的知识。

 

第五篇

In the last period of my education, I’ve embraced the study of academic English. Although it is still unfit to say that I have undergone sufficient changes to anticipate an IELTS exam, I am different to some extend from two months before.

First, the course altered my world view. In other words, It made a significant alteration to my position on widely-discussed issues and simple affairs by providing me new methods to convey a massage, think independently and form my own opinion. This change is mainly due to my sensitive and thoughtful classmates, who are often willing to share their thoughts and ask me to state my view. Second, the course taught me ways to generate ideas and categorize them with academic norms. This helped me to distinguish one idea from another and decide how to express them in my essay, which is helpful in clearing the disastrous feud in my mind. Finally, my language standard progressed with the assistance of various techniques such as paragraphing, vocabulary upgrading and grammatical reformation.

On the opposite, there are certain things that remained unchanged. My writing style, which was commonly referred as extra-extravagant, is still rather over general and lavish. My handwriting remained unrecognizable as before. In addition, my efficiency is as low as before, which indicates that I go to bed at 11 every Friday evening. On the other hand, my attitude towards the course was also unchanged__it is still regarded as one of priority in my daily life.

In conclusion, my road lies long before me, and I am expected to change more gradually to take the examination. I should always work hard in the following term.
