威廉•汉德特是一所私立贵族子弟学校的老师，教授古希腊、古罗马文明史。古希腊古罗马的历史就仿佛他的信仰。他坚信对于十五六岁的孩子们来说，这段历史交给他们的绝不仅仅只是年代、事件和历史人物，那些伟人的品格可以塑造孩子们的灵魂。 
孩子们都很乖，可当参议员的儿子赛奇维克•贝尔（Sedgewick Bell）到来之后，孩子们在他的影响下学会了所有的恶习：喝酒、打架、戏弄老师、抽烟、勾引女校学生。汉德特耐心训导赛奇维克，使赛奇维克成绩进步很快。在学校一年一度的凯撒知识问答大赛的选拔中，汉德特出于私心暗自换下马丁•布利斯（Martin Blythe）让赛奇维克进入了决赛，没想到赛奇维克却在决赛中作弊。 
25年后，赛奇维克已经是商界巨贾，发起同学聚会，提议模拟一场凯撒知识大赛。谁料赛奇维克再次作弊，并振振有词“骗人才是生存之道”。汉德特为自己当初的作弊羞愧，也为赛奇维克的厚颜心寒，最终向马丁承认了当年的过错。 
　　 
Hundert: As I’ve gotten older, I realize I’m certain of only two things. Days that begin with rowing on a lake are better than days that do not. Second, a man’s character is his fate.

Hundert: For most of us, our stories can be written long before we die. There are exceptions among the great men of history, but they are rare, and I am not one of them.

Hundert: The end depends upon the beginning.

Hundert: Mr. Masoudi, could you define the word “path” for me?  
Masoudi: Well, there are several definitions, I suppose.  
Hundert: Would “a route along which someone or something moves” be among them?  
Masoudi: Yeah. Oh, yeah. I’m s—sorry, sir.  
Hundert: Follow the path, Mr. Masoudi. Walk where the great men before you have walked.  
Masoudi: Yes, sir. It’s, uh—It’s better for the grass.  
Hundert: It’s better for you.

Hundert: Shutruk-Nahhunte! King! Sovereign of the land of Elam! Destroyer of Sippar! Behold, his accomplishments cannot be found in any history book. Why? Because great ambition and conquest without contribution is without significance. What will your contribution be? How will history remember you?

Hundert: Aristophanes once wrote, roughly translated, “Youth ages. Immaturity is outgrown. Ignorance can be educated, and drunkenness sobered, but STUPID lasts forever.”  
汉德特：阿里斯托芬曾写到——翻译过来大意是——“青春会老化，幼稚会消失；无知可以被教化，醉酒可以清醒，但愚蠢只会永恒。” 
 
Hundert: Tyranny is what we have in this classroom. It works.

Hundert: You passed.  
Sedgewick: It’s only a C-.  
Hundert: Well, you know what they say about Rome.  
Sedgewickl: It wasn’t built in a day?  
Hundert: No. All roads lead to it.  
汉德特：你通过了。

汉德特：你知道他们怎么说罗马的吗？

Deepak: Not to know what happened before you were born is to be forever a child.

Hundert: Sir, it’s my job to mold your son’s character, and I think if...  
Senator Bell: Mold him? Jesus God in Heaven, son. You’re not gonna mold my boy. Your job is to teach my son. You teach him his times tables. Teach him why the world is round. Teach him who killed who and when and where. That is your job. You, sir, will not mold by son. I will mold him.  
汉德特：先生，我的工作是塑造你儿子的人格，我想能否…… 
参议员贝尔：塑造他？上帝啊，孩子！你的工作不是塑造我的孩子，你的工作是教他我儿子，教他乘法口诀，教他为什么地球是圆的，教他谁在何时何地杀了谁。那才是你的工作。而你，老师，不要塑造我儿子，我会塑造他。 
 
Hundert: If time had made concessions for love, it made none for death.  
汉德特：如果时间为爱曾作出让步的话，它对死亡却没有任何让步。 
 
Hundert: I suppose if you’re gonna lose, you may as well lose to the brightest. 
汉德特：假设你要输，你也要输给最聪明的那个人。 
 
Older Sedgewick: I live in a real world where people do what they need to do to get what they want. If it is lying, if it is cheating, then so be it. 
成年赛奇维克：我生活在一个现实世界：人们为了得到他们想要的会不惜一切。如果有必要撒谎，如果有必要作弊，那也只能那样。 
 
Older Deepak: A great teacher has little external history to record. His life goes over into other lives. These men are pillars in the intimate structure of our schools. They are more essential than its stones or beams, and they will continue to be a kindling force and a revealing power in our lives.

Hundert: I had come here in the hope that I had been wrong about Sedgewick Bell. Or rather, that I had been right—right to believe in him all those years ago. But this is a story without surprises. As a student of history, I could be shocked... neither by his audacity, nor his success. I had failed Sedgewick. But the worth of a life is not determined by a single failure, or a solitary success. My other students taught me that. However much we stumble, it is a teacher’s burden always to hope that with learning, a boy’s character might be changed. And, so, the destiny of a man.
