Chapter 2

A surprise visit

“We’ll be the most beautiful girls there,” chorused the stepsisters.

“I’m sure the Prince will want to marry one of you,” said their mother, proudly.

“Now, Cinderella,” She went on, “as a special treat and since it’s nearly Christmas…”

“Yes?” Cinderella cried.

“You may help Griselda and Grimella choose their dresses.”

All that week, boot-makers, dressmakers, wig-makers, and hairdressers streamed through the door. Cinderella tried to make her stepsisters look as pretty as possible. It wasn’t easy.

Grimella wanted to wear a hat decorated with stuffed birds. Griselda chose a lime green dress with yellow spots.

“What about feathers, rather than stuffed birds, Grimella?” Cinderella suggested politely.

“And Griselda, I think the yellow dress suited you better.”

Shut up! Cinders!

“What would you know?” said Grimella. “But you might be right. We must look grander than everyone else. Sew on lots of rubies and ribbons.”

Cinderella worked all day and all night, putting the finishing touches to their outfits.

Hurry up, Cinderella.

At last they were ready. Cinderella’s stepsisters gazed at themselves in the mirror.

“Don’t we look gorgeous!” they shrieked. “We’ll be the finest ladies at the Ball.”

“Oh my Tinkerbells, you look wonderful,” their mother gasped. “Let’s go! The coach is here! Cinderella - put up the Christmas decorations while we’re gone.”

The front door was opened. There was a swish of skirts and a blast of cold air. Then Cinderella was left alone.

As she struggled with the Christmas tree, tears blurred her eyes. “Oh!” She sobbed, getting tangled in tinsel. “I wish ----I wish I could go to the Ball.”

A loud crash in the chimney made Cinderella look up. There, in the fireplace, covered in soot, was her godmother.

一次惊喜的拜访

格里梅拉想戴一顶装饰着鸟类标本的帽子。格里赛尔达选了一件点缀着黄色圆点的青柠色连衣裙。

“用羽毛装饰帽子怎么样，而不是用鸟类标本，格里梅拉?”灰姑娘礼貌地建议道。

“还有格里赛尔达，我觉得这条黄裙子更适合你。”

闭嘴! 灰姑娘！

“你知道什么?”格里梅拉说。“但你可能是对的。我们必须比别人看起来更高贵。给（我）缝上许多红宝石和丝带。”

灰姑娘日以继夜地工作，为她们的衣服做最后的修饰。

加快速度, 灰姑娘。

终于，她们准备好了。灰姑娘的继姐妹们打量着镜子里的自己。

“我们看起来真漂亮!” 她们尖叫起来。“我们将成为舞会上最漂亮的女士。”

“哦，我的小仙女们，你们看上去真漂亮!” 她们的妈妈喘着气说道。“我们走吧!马车来了!灰姑娘——我们不在的时候把圣诞装饰品挂起来。”

前门开了。裙子嗖嗖作响，一股冷空气吹了进来。这时，只剩下灰姑娘一个人。

当她挣扎着与圣诞树搏斗时，泪水模糊了她的双眼。“哦! ”她抽泣着，被金属丝缠住了。“我希望——我希望我能去参加舞会。”

烟囱里的一声巨响使灰姑娘抬起头来。她的教母就在壁炉里，满身煤灰。
