Chapter 1

Invitation to a ball

“Cinderella!” shouted her stepmother, looking up from a letter. “Come and clean the bedroom at once.”

“Yes, Stepmother,” Cinderella called from the kitchen, where she was making lunch. Her stepsisters had ordered their usual revolting dishes.

Urgh!

“Well, I’ve made the sausage trifle,” Cinderella thought to herself. “The cabbage and custard pie will just have to wait.”

She picked up her broom and made her way to the stairs. But her stepsisters were blocking the way.

“What’s little Cinders doing today then?” teased Griselda.

“She’s sweeping away cobwebs, like a servant,” sneered Grimella.

“Get on with it then, servant girl,” said Griselda.

Just then, Cinderella’s stepmother appeared.

“Griselda, Grimella,” she cried. “I have the most exciting news. The Prince is giving a Christmas Ball and you’re invited.”

“We’ll dress you in the finest clothes - only the best for my beautiful darlings. Isn’t that right, dear?” she said to Cinderella’s father.

Cinderella gripped her broom hard. “May I go to the Ball as well?” she asked, in a scared whisper.

“You? Go to the Ball?” said her stepmother. “You must be joking. You belong in the kitchen.”

Cinderella turned to her father, but he coughed and looked away. “He’s too scared of Stepmother to help me,” thought Cinderella. “If only I could go to the Ball…”

舞会请柬

“灰姑娘！” 她的继母喊道，看完信件抬起头来。“马上来打扫卧室。”

“是的，继母。” 正在做午饭的灰姑娘在厨房回答。她的继姐妹们照例点了令人作呕的饭菜。

呃! !

“哦，我已经做好了香肠蛋糕。” 灰姑娘想。“卷心菜和奶油蛋羹派只能等一等了。”

她拿起扫帚朝楼梯走去。但是她的继姐妹挡住了路。

“那么，今天灰姑娘在干什么呢?“ 格里赛尔达取笑的说。

“她在扫蜘蛛网，就像仆人一样，”格里梅拉冷笑着说。

“那就继续干吧，女仆！” 格里赛尔达说。

就在这时，灰姑娘的继母出现了。

“格里赛尔达，格里梅拉，”她叫道。“我有一个最激动人心的消息。王子要举办圣诞舞会，你们被邀请了。”

“我们会给你们穿上最好的衣服，给我漂亮的宝贝们穿的只能是最好的。不是吗，亲爱的?”她对灰姑娘的父亲说。

灰姑娘紧紧抓住扫帚。“我也可以去参加舞会吗?”她害怕地低声问。

“你?去舞会吗? “ 继母说，“你一定是在开玩笑。你属于厨房。”

灰姑娘转向父亲，父亲咳嗽了一声，把目光移开，她心想:“他太害怕继母了，不肯帮我。要是我能去参加舞会该多好……”
