Two years after being told he might never be able to skate again, Eddy Alvarez considers his recovery and ability to represent the United States as a speedskater at the Sochi Games to be his greatest accomplishment.

Traveling across the ice at roughly 64 kilometers per hour, speedskater Eddy Alvarez earned his nickname “Eddy the Jet” as a master of the fastest human-powered sport.

The 24-year-old Florida native, the son of Cuban immigrants, began his skating career at age 5 with a pair of plastic rollerblades. His natural talent soon made him a local attraction, and he performed tricks with sponsorship from a Miami skate shop. Alvarez loves baseball and hopes to play professionally.

For now, his attention is focused on the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia.

“I dream about standing on that podium, winning a medal. It would be such an accomplishment for me because of everything I had to go through,” he said.

In March 2012, Alvarez’s dream nearly ended when he had to have surgery to repair torn patellar tendons in both knees. Doctors told him he might never be able to skate again.

Alvarez considers his recovery and comeback to be his greatest accomplishment. “It was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to face,” he said.
