Sylvia Earle is a world-famous American oceanographer, marine biologist, explorer, and author. She was the chief scientist at the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) from 1990 to 1992.  In 1992 she founded Deep Ocean Exploration and Research (DOER) to design, operate, support and consult on manned and robotic subsea systems. Since 1998 she has been a National Geographicexplorer-in-residence, sometimes called "Her Deepness “or "The Sturgeon General". In 2009, Earlelaunched Mission Blue, which aims to establish marine protected areas around the globe.

In 1979, she set a women's depth record of 381 meters (1,250 ft). She also holds the women's depth record for a solo dive in a submersible: 1,000 meters (3,300 ft). Earle has led more than 100 expeditions worldwide involving in excess of 7,000 hours underwater in connection with her research.

Earle is the author of more than 180 publications concerning marine science and technology, including many children’s books. She has participated in numerous television productions and given scientific, technical, and general interest lectures in more than 70 countries.

Earle was named Time magazine's first "hero for the planet" in 1998.

西尔维娅·厄尔博士是举世闻名的美国海洋学家、海洋生物学家、海洋探险家和作家。她在1990年到1992年担任美国国家海洋和大气管理局(NOAA)的首席科学家。1992年她建立深海勘探和研究事务所（DOER），负责设计、操作、支持和咨询载人和机器人潜水系统。从1998年开始她一直是美国“国家地理”驻地探险家,  被业界称为“深海女王”或“鲟鱼将军”。2009年厄尔发起了著名的“蓝色任务”项目, 旨在世界各地建立海洋保护区。

1979年厄尔博士创造了女性潜水的世界纪录381米(1,250英尺)。她还保持着女性潜艇潜水的世界记录1,000米(3,300英尺)。厄尔至今已经领导了超过100项的全球探险项目, 涉及超过7,000小时的水下研究工作。
