13 March 2013

We all probably take our brains for granted. A nonprofit group wants to focus attention on the wonders of the brain during Brain Awareness Week. Hundreds of organizations everywhere in the world are holding events and discussions about neuroscience March 11–17.

Every day, working or playing, you’re carrying around one of the most complex things in the universe. It’s your brain, and experts are making a point March 11–17 to excite the public about neuroscience and the study of how the brain works.

“Recent neuroscience advances have shown the potential for conquering the devastating diseases and disorders of the brain,” according to the Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives, a professional organization devoted to educating the public about neuroscience. Complex and varied conditions such as cocaine addiction, learning disabilities, dementia and paralysis might all be relieved with discoveries in brain research.

Dana Alliance associates are holding hundreds of events and activities worldwide. For example, at the U.S. National Institute of Mental Health, students are joining in experiments and games to broaden their understanding of how the brain works.

A nine-story-high brain balloon (shown above) stole the show during Brain Awareness Week at the University of Southern Mississippi a few years back.
