17岁的范江在2012年的英特尔科学奖（Intel Science Talent Search）中进入决赛并获奖。自那以后，她开始在斯坦福大学（Stanford University）学习。
根据科学与大众协会（Society for Science & the Public）报道，需要来自射电望远镜的大量数据才能生成图像，而这些射电望远镜通过传输线彼此相连。范江研究出如何确定望远镜的最佳排列，从而可以通过统计方法使用较少的数据生成优质图像。她的研究论文由勘探地球物理学家协会（Society of Exploration Geophysicists）发表。

Student Discovers Way to Improve Radio Telescope Astronomy
Learn how a secondary school student worked out a way to help astronomers who use radio telescopes widely separated on Earth to observe space.
As a secondary school student, Clara Louisa Fannjiang of Davis, California, worked out a way that could help astronomers who use radio telescopes widely separated on Earth to observe space.
At the age of 17, Fannjiang was a prize-winning finalist in the 2012 Intel Science Talent Search. She has since begun studies at Stanford University.
According to the Society for Science & the Public, producing images requires huge amounts of data from the radio telescopes, which are connected to each other by transmission lines. Fannjiang worked out how to determine the best array for the telescopes in a way that statistics could be used to reconstruct superior images from less data. Her research paper was published by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists.
In a YouTube video, Fannjiang encouraged young people interested in science to sample several disciplines before deciding to concentrate on one. "I think it's very important to find out what you love," she said.
