Preserving Natural Parks: Conservation Efforts and the Role of Eco-Tourism

The United States is world-famous for its National Park System, with 58 national parks, the earliest of which dates back to 1872.  China also has established national parks and is working to create more.  Please join us at the Beijing American Center for a panel discussion with three conservation experts about the future of national parks, nature conservation efforts, and the role eco-tourism can play in preserving these national treasures for future generations.  American conservationist and eco-tourism entrepreneur Robert Devine will lead a conversation with Lu Zhi, professor of conservation biology, Executive Director of Peking University’s Center for Nature and Society, and founder of Shan-Shui Conservation Center; and Mei Zhang, founder of WildChina Travel and Beshan Travel and eco-tourism proponent.  The panel presentation will be conducted in English.  We hope you will join us this fascinating discussion!

Speakers Bios

Mei Zhang

 

Mei Zhang is the founder of WildChina, a trend setting travel company based in Beijing.  WildChina defines luxury adventure and off-the-beaten-path experience in China.  Mei left her humble roots as an electrician’s daughter to pursue a Harvard Business School MBA, and later worked as a consultant at McKinsey & Company.  However, she found her true passion in travel and built WildChina into one of the world’s BEST Adventure Travel Companies, according to National Geographic Traveler.  WildChina now has offices in China and the U.S., and its business model is presented as a case study to all first-year students at Harvard Business School.  In 2011, Mei began another endeavor – Beshan Travel, introducing a chic travel lifestyle to sophisticated Chinese.  Mei lives in Beijing with her husband and three children.  All the while, she maintains a virtual identity true to her origin, a yunnangirl.  

 Lu Zhi

  

Lu Zhi is a professor of conservation biology and the executive director of Peking University's Center for Nature and Society, which promotes better environmental policy and builds leadership capacity in China. She also founded Shan-­‐Shui Conservation Center, a Chinese NGO that demonstrates effective solutions for living in harmony with nature. Zhi began her career in 1985 with a research project on the wild giant panda and three years on wildlife conservation genetics at National Institute of Health in the USA. From 1995 to 2000, she led the World Wildlife Fund's panda conservation program and established its program in Tibet. She then received a scholarship from Harvard to study issues involving world developments, and thereafter spent one year at the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies teaching conservation management. Zhi served as the first country director for Conservation International in China between 2002 and 2007. The field projects she leads are located in western China, including Sichuan, Qinghai, Tibet, Yunnan, and Gansu.
