• 1886年,约翰·彭伯顿(John S. Pemberton)博士在亚特兰大发明了著名的饮料可口可乐(Coca-Cola )。

Capital: Atlanta

Population: Nearly 10 million people live in Georgia.

Geography: Georgia’s rich farmland rises west and north from a small stretch of south Atlantic coastline. It is 370 kilometers wide, 480 kilometers long and encompasses 59,425 square kilometers.

Higher Education: Georgia has nearly 70 public colleges, universities and technical colleges in addition to more than 45 private institutes of higher learning. Its public universities include the University of Georgia, the oldest public university in the United States.

Major Industries are agriculture, textiles and paper manufacturing. The military is also big business for Georgia: It’s the home of many bases representing all branches of the U.S. armed services.

Famous Georgians include former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr. and U.S. Girl Scouts founder Juliette Gordon Low.

International Connection: Savannah, Georgia, has sister city relationships with Patras, Greece; Halle, Germany; Kaya, Burkina Faso; and Batumi in the Republic of Georgia.

Fun Facts:

• Blackbeard the pirate (Edward Teach) made his home on a Georgia island that the U.S. Congress in 1975 set aside as Blackbeard Island Wilderness Area.

• The Vidalia onion, known as the sweetest onion in the world, can be grown only in the fields around the Georgia towns of Vidalia and Glennville.

• The popular beverage Coca-Cola was invented in 1886 by Dr. John S. Pemberton in Atlanta.

Adventure Idea: Each spring, Bloomingdale, Georgia, hosts the Big Nasty Mud Run. Men, women and children test their endurance strength and skill as they race a 6-kilometer obstacle course with lots and lots of mud.
