From Gold Rush to America's Golden Gate

From gold rushes to earthquakes to international expositions, San Francisco has weathered it all.
Although Spanish colonists founded San Francisco in 1776, the “City by the Bay” became a boomtown in 1849 when the California gold rush attracted treasure seekers from around the world. In that year alone, the city’s population burgeoned from 1,000 to 25,000.
In 1906, after a period of sustained growth, an earthquake and several fires destroyed more than 80 percent of San Francisco. Supported by the strong financial sectors established during the gold rush, San Francisco recovered in time to host the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition.
The exposition inspired construction of the Palace of Fine Arts (shown above). Today, the palace is the last remaining building from the exposition and one of San Francisco’s favorite tourist destinations.
The Golden Gate Bridge is another of San Francisco's iconic structures. When completed in 1937, it included the longest susn bridge span in the world. Though it no longer holds that record, the bridge remains a truly impressive feat of civil engineering and an internationally recognized symbol of San Francisco.
