California’s Yosemite National Park is a splendor of nature and a testament to human prescience.
A six-hour drive from the world movie capital takes you to the majesty of Yosemite National Park. Located in California’s Sierra Nevada range, the park has more than 3,100 square kilometers of granite cliffs, deep valleys, quiet meadows and giant sequoias.
Waterfalls are one of the park’s main attractions. When backlit by the sun, Horsetail Fall wows visitors with its fiery orange glow. The waterfall is seasonal, however, so guests can catch a glimpse only during the last two weeks of February. Granite features such as the Half Dome and El Capitan are among the park’s more dramatic elements. El Capitan is especially popular with rock climbers for its course variety. Yosemite National Park is also home to three groves of giant sequoias, trees that can live up to 3,000 years.
Each year, the park welcomes more than 3.5 million visitors. Group hikes, overnight backpacking trips, rock climbing, rafting and even photography outings are available.
One of the first national parks in the United States, Yosemite National Park is a testament to the prescience and perseverance of people such as John Muir, Robert Underwood Johnson and U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt. These individuals recognized that certain natural splendors must be protected and preserved for all people to enjoy.
