火星飞行任务曾多次失败,但“好奇号”成功着陆

“好奇号”登陆火星是人类作出的第40次尝试,也是美国执行的第14次获得成功的火星飞行任务。
8月5日,美国执行太空探索任务的机构——美国国家航空航天局(NASA)——完成了一项完美无缺的火星科学实验室(Mars Science Laboratory)着陆任务。飞行器上的摄像头在降落时不停地摄取快照,捕捉到上图展示的火星表面的景观。在这个沙漠般的景观中,左边暗色的涟漪是沙丘。景观中还点缀着过去撞击形成的陨石坑,以及高度为几米至几十米的小型陡坡。
到目前为止,这项使命进行得非常顺利,使人们很容易忘记在执行火星飞行任务的过程中失败多于成功的事实。不同的国家曾尝试过总计39次飞行任务。其中只有15次获得成功。“好奇号”漫游车登陆是人类作出的第40次尝试,也是美国执行的第14次获得成功的火星飞行任务。欧洲航天局(ESA)于2003年将一个轨道飞行器和着陆器送上火星。欧洲航天局的轨道飞行器目前仍在继续飞行执行一项长期使命。

Curiosity Landing Defies Failures of Past

The latest mission to Mars has been successful in its difficult landing and first days, an outcome that wasn’t guaranteed. This mission marked the 40th attempt by humankind to reach Mars. The landing of the rover Curiosity is the 15th success.
The U.S. space agency NASA executed a perfect landing of the Mars Science Laboratory August 5. The cameras on board the craft were snapping as it descended, capturing this view of the Martian surface. The dark ripples at left of this desert-like scene are dunes. The landscape is also dotted with degraded impact craters and small escarpments that range from a few meters to many tens of meters in height.
The mission has gone well so far, and it is easy to forget that failure exceeds success in Mars missions. Various countries have attempted a total of 39 missions to Mars. Only 15 succeeded. The landing of the Curiosity rover was the 40th attempt by humankind, and the 14th successful Mars mission by the United States. The European Space Agency (ESA) sent an orbiter and lander to Mars in 2003. The ESA orbiter is still flying on an extended mission.
