Juneteenth一词由June(6月)和nineteenth(19)两词合成。

Juneteenth, the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States, is observed each year on June 19. Learn how the holiday originated and how it is celebrated today.

Juneteenth, celebrated annually on June 19, is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. The term “Juneteenth” is a hybrid word combining “June” and “nineteenth,” and the occasion honors African-American heritage by recalling the announcement of the abolition of slavery in Texas in 1865.

Now recognized as a holiday in many U.S. states, Juneteenth is observed across the country with parades, barbecues, picnics, baseball games, rodeos, neighborhood parties, children’s essay contests and other activities. Juneteenth’s origins can be traced to the Emancipation Proclamation, issued by President Abraham Lincoln on September 22, 1862, with an effective date of January 1, 1863.

Texas, as part of the Confederacy during the U.S. Civil War (1861–1865), was resistant to the Emancipation Proclamation, so on June 18, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger and 2,000 federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to take charge of the state and enforce the emancipation of its slaves.

On June 19, 1865, Granger stood on the balcony of Galveston’s Ashton Villa and publicly read the contents of “General Order Number 3,” beginning with the words: “The people of Texas are informed that in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and free labor.”

Former slaves in Galveston rejoiced in the streets, and Juneteenth celebrations began in Texas the following year. The holiday and its traditions are explored in the novel Juneteenth by African-American author Ralph Ellison.
