Looking for More Women in Science, Math — and Car Racing

Katherine Legge fell in love with cars at age 9, and now at 31 she will compete in one of the oldest and most important automobile races in the world, the Indianapolis 500. She will be only the ninth woman to tackle the 500-mile (805-kilometer) course in Indianapolis, Indiana, this Memorial Day weekend — and she will lead the first all-female team.
Legge’s helmet for the May 27 race will bear a logo honoring America’s 2.3 million Girl Scouts. As the organization’s inaugural STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) ambassador, she wants to encourage more young women to study and seek careers in STEM fields.
“It’s really something that’s very close to my heart,” she told CNN May 25. “I think they are the careers you’ll need to be in, in the future.”
British-born Legge said her parents always told her she could be anything she wanted to be. Young women today should pursue their dreams “with 110 percent knowledge they can get there if they really, really want it,” she said.
And yes, she also thinks there should be more women race car drivers. It’s a sport “where women can compete equally,” Legge said, “and there’s absolutely no reason why we can’t be winning races.”
