Hawaii’s Treasure of Nature and Culture

Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument in Hawaii is a precious cultural and natural addition to UNESCO’s list of World Heritage sites.

Hawaii’s Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument is one of the largest marine conservation areas in the world. It encompasses 362,073 square kilometers of the Pacific Ocean. The coral reefs found in Papahānaumokuākea are home to more than 7,000 marine species (including the bluefin trevally, above), one-quarter of which are found nowhere else.

Other species found there are the threatened green turtle and the endangered Hawaiian monk seal.

The name Papahānaumokuākea relates to the story of Papahānaumoku (a mother figure who is personified in the earth) and Wākea (a father figure who is personified in the sky). In Hawaiian culture, these two figures are responsible for the creation of the entire archipelago, and they are the most recognized ancestors of the Native Hawaiian people.

On July 30, 2010, Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument became the most recent U.S. site to be named a World Heritage site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). There are currently 936 sites. Papahānaumokuākea is one of only 47 marine sites recognized and one of only 28 “mixed” sites, recognized for both their natural and cultural value.
