(Theodore
(Mesa Verde National

Mesa Verde National Park Preserves Mankind’s Early Works
Mesa Verde National Park in Colorado is preserving ancient man-made structures.
When President Theodore Roosevelt established the Mesa Verde National Park in 1906, it was the first U.S. national park designated to preserve the works of early mankind.
Located in Colorado, Mesa Verde (“green table” in Spanish) occupies 81.4 square miles (211 square kilometers) and features more than 600 cliff dwellings built by ancient Pueblo peoples between A.D. 550 and 1300. One of the most spectacular structures is the “cliff palace” (shown here), which may be the largest of its kind in North America.
In 1978, Mesa Verde became one of the first U.S. national parks to be accepted as a World Heritage site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. The UNESCO World Heritage site program catalogues and helps preserve sites of outstanding cultural or natural importance to the common heritage of humanity. As of 2011, 936 sites were listed worldwide, with 21 located in the United States.
