The U.S. Embassy Fourth of July reception was an amazing experience –I have never experienced anything as grand. The U.S. Embassy invited me and other American students studying in Beijing to be “Ambassadors” for a day and work alongside American diplomats to greet guests from all over the world such as ambassadors, top military officials, heads of international companies, influential journalists and chief editors, and students and professors from China’s leading universities.
The highlight of the reception was the official ceremony which included the singing the national anthems of China and the U.S., U.S. Marines’ presentation of colors and a welcome speech by the Charge d’Affairs of the Embassy, Robert Wang.
In October 2011, a real U.S. rodeo is coming to Beijing to introduce Chinese people to the culture of the American west. As part of the promotion, the organizers of the rodeo donated a mechanical bull for guests to enjoy – it’s too bad no one was allowed to ride it.
Barbeque, Mexican food, ice cream, beer, and margaritas added to the enjoyment of all our guests who also enjoyed listening to a live music band that played authentic bluegrass music from the American mid-west. I think I speak for all the student ambassadors when I say that this was definitely the highlight of our summer.
