Housing and Income Distribution
Experts around the world have warned that China could be experiencing a housing bubble. Not everyone agrees, but it is true that housing prices are rising rapidly. The government has already stepped in to limit the amount of credit available to property buyers in hopes of cooling the market down. But the cost of housing is still a primary concern for the policy makers and advisors meeting in Beijing this week. Another related concern is the growing stratification of incomes among urban residents. Many urban residents struggle to pay for housing, even as the sales of luxury housing are booming. In addition to the income gap among urban residents, China also has a growing income gap between urban and rural residents. Last year urban residents' income was more than three times that of rural residents. What can China do to make sure people have affordable housing options? How can China narrow the income gap among urban residents and between urban and rural residents?
In this edition of the show we'll discuss China's housing market
and income distribution. So let's get started.
In the first part of our program we'll be focusing on China's
housing market. We're speaking with Mr. Chen Jie, Deputy
Director of the Fudan Housing Policy Research Center at Fudan
University in Shanghai.
