(Diana
K.
Diana
Davies, Deputy Head of the International Department of Princeton
University, visited YK Pao School on 6th November 2009. Princeton is an Ivy
League institution and has produced two presidents and 33 Nobel
Prize winners. The ‘inventor’
of Pinyin (a
method for Romanising
Chinese language), Zhou Youguang, taught at Princeton.
While at YK Pao
School, Ms Davies visited a P1 EU class. The students were
practising a
role-play activity in which they pretended to be in a restaurant or
supermarket, communicating in Chinese and English. This was to help them
experience and come to understand the different occupational roles
involved in supermarkets and restaurants and to introduce the idea
of division of labour.
Ms
Davis watched the ‘performances’ intently and was very interested
in how the students could switch from one language to
another.
She said that it was the first time that she had seen a ‘genuine’
bilingual school in which students properly grasped both
languages.
She said it was a pleasure to see.
Following that, Ms Davis discussed future opportunities for
cooperation, including the possibility of YK Pao School recruiting
interns or staff from Princeton.
