The
event was opened with a Beethoven sonata.
Following that, Howard and Edward Morton Jack performed ‘Story of
Barbar’ by Poulenc for piano and narrator.
After
these pieces, YK Pao School student, Linda, P4, bravely got up to
play ‘Für Elise’. Following Linda’s recital, and
to the surprise of the audience, Leslie Howard invited a young boy
to the stage to play with him. The boy happened
to be 12 year old prodigy Niuniu, who has already participated in
many international concerts. They played
wonderfully together.
After the performance, parents had the chance to ask questions
of Leslie Howard. Many people were keen to ask a
question that many parents worry about: ‘My child does not want to
practise the piano. What can I do?’
Leslie
Howard responded by asking a question of the audience: ‘How many of
the parents in attendance had learned the piano as a child and
never touch the piano today?’ He then went on to
explain that music should be a part of everybody’s
life. For children to learn about music, they
should first listen to music. To do this, parents
should first create a musical environment for
children. When children are immersed in music and
come to like it, they will naturally want to learn
it. When encouraging a child to learn the piano,
one should not be fixated on tangible progress, much less make
learning the piano into a chore.
The money
raised from the event will go towards buying a new piano for the
School.
