Edward de
At a recent conference I
attended about the impact of modern science and technology on
education, I was struck by a constant theme running through the
keynote speeches: ‘change’. According to
statistics:
● today’s learners will have had 10-14 jobs by the
age of 38;
● the top 10 in-demand jobs in 2010 did not exist
in 2004;
● the amount of new technical information is
doubling every 2
years.
These figures all point to a paradigm shift in education;
transforming education from a system focused on students
remembering extensive amounts of knowledge to a new paradigm where
learners develop a set of key competencies, precisely defined
concepts underpinned by a thirst for knowledge, analytical and
problem-solving skills, which allow the learner to become a
life-long learner.
At
YK Pao School we have such a set of key
competencies:
● Managing
Self
● Relating to
others
● Participating and
Contributing
● Using Language and
Symbols
● Thinking
But how do teachers educated in the old paradigm learn to teach in
ways that develop these key competencies and, in particular, how do
they teach students to ‘think’? At the
14th International Conference on Thinking
I
attended a session presented by Edward de Bono, the person who developed the Six Thinking Hats programme. Six Thinking Hats is a thinking tool for group discussion and
individual thinking presented in a very visual and child-friendly
way. Using The Six Thinking Hats enables people to think about a problem from
different perspectives ‘wearing’ each of the thinking hats in
turn. These
are powerful thinking tools used by top companies around the world;
they are also tools that help children to develop their own
thinking skills.
To this end a trainer from the de Bono organisation was at school
in January, strengthening how we teach students to think, to
provide them with the requisite skills and competencies for the
21st Century.
