It is high time for an update from SPJ. I’m
very excited about everything SPJ has planned and still has coming;
we have a truly dedicated SPJ Board. I would like to update you all
on some very exciting SPJ events still to come. And this is just a
taste of things from the Academic Affairs / Debate Committee and
me!
1. The J-School Debate: We
just got word that Columbia
University President Lee
Bollinger will be joining us NEXT TUESDAY, April 26th at 6
p.m. in the Lecture Hall for the last J-School Debate of the year.
In case you missed it, the topic is whether or not journalism
should be funded by the government. Read
more here.
—> Please spread the
word! In addition to Bollinger, Chen Weihua, Deputy Editor
of the China Daily’s U.S. Edition, John Bentley, CBS Reporter in
the Political Unit, Dan Cashman, former NPR Reporter and host of
the Sporkful, and J-School students Linette Lopez and Bilal Lakhani
are debating. Plus, the one and only Professor Richard Wald will
again join us as debate chair.
2. Master’s Project Showcase:
Hopefully you all saw the email inviting you to submit your
master’s projects to the master’s project showcase which will be on
May 11th from 12 – 5 p.m. I’ve been working with Liz Davies on the
Academic Affairs Committee and Professor Ann Cooper to plan this
celebration of our master’s projects. It’s a great opportunity for
us to showcase our work and even practice pitching it. We’ve gotten
a huge response so far of people who want to participate, but there
is room for more and any medium of project can be included!
—> Please sign up and participate. The
deadline to submit your project is April 26th. To sign
up, fill out this form.
3. Master’s Project Online
Showcase: I’m also working with Meghan Berry to build a
special page in the J-School website just for our master’s projects
to be displayed. It can serve as a great clip if you’re not sure
your master’s project will be published elsewhere. And if you are
thinking about publishing it, just submit an excerpt or trailer. It
will literally be an online version of all our great work for this
year, and the first of its kind for any J-School class.
—> Please sign up and
participate. The deadline to submit your project is April
26th.Interested students should
also submit this form.
4. DSLR Tech Jam: Hurray! For
those of you who have been wanting to learn how to shoot video on
the DSLR, we’ve got a tech jam in progress. Duy and the Digital
Media Associates will be sending out details soon.
We’ve been busy! I hope that gives you a helpful update.
Thank you all for your hard work,
Chiara Sottile
SPJ Vice President
