All nations should help
support the development of a global university designed to engage
students in the process of solving the world’s most persistent
social problems.
The
speaker contends that it is a good way to solving the world’s
persistent problems through establishing a global university. The
viewpoint seems compelling and reasonable, but after careful
consideration, we will find it is overly optimistic and not
achievable. From every aspect, it
is very difficult to coordinate the relationship among the
nations.
To establish a global
university is well-intentioned. Maybe we can accumulate the all
needed recourses and solve the pressing problems or research the
anticipate problems with collective strengths. But from the
realistic angle, it is really a mission
impossible.
First, if we built a global university, our goal is must to solve
the global problems which is need all nations’ help. If we research
one subject, it means that we should know the latest development of
that area, and it also means that we should get the cutting-edge
research outcomes first from certain countries. But there are huge
differences of the research levels among all countries, it must
means some countries must submit more science results and others
will submit less. This is maybe seems a little problem. But
actually it is hard to coordinate from realistic angle. It is
entirely possible that some countries are not willing to submit the
latest results for some certain reasons.
Second, because of the
economic strengths are quite different among all countries, the
investment of the global university will be certainly different.
Generally speaking, the country which invests more money must want
to have the dominant power in the university. It must lead to a
phenomenon that the university is dominated by the developed
countries, yet developing countries’ opinions could be ignored.
This unbalanced situation will impede the equal right of students.
Even influence the morale of the students.
Last but not the
least, every country has its own language, cultural background,
customs, and value. Maybe language problem is easy to solve, but
the others is not. For example, some countries may prone to take
aggressive measures to do researches, while some may like to take
conservative measures to do researches, how can we easily
coordinate it? And even to the same question, the opinions may be
contrary.
Take the genetically-modified food as an example, some countries
supported its research, but some countries view it very dangerous
to human beings. The similar cases still has a lot. The different values
toward researches must result in argument or even clashes. This
will not improve the efficiency of researches but maybe severely
decrease the efficiency.
From what has been
discussed above, we can safely draw the conclusion that to build a
global university is just a beautiful wish. But if we have a
realistic attitude, we will soon know that this is a very difficult
problem. Yes, I concede that the international cooperation is
necessary, but the best way is not through a global university, we
can communicate more through the Internet, we can run more forums
to propel the international exchanges. They are much economical and
effective than build a university.
