My friend sent a message to me, “A baby fish asked her mother, “Why
can’t we live on earth? Mother fish- earth is not the place for
fishes, it’s made for selfishes.” Selfishness makes one a fool or
blind. We many are selfish and we have entered into the path of
meditation to be a selfless person. We fools have come to the earth
to discard our foolness but many will leave having become more
foolish. Because the way we have accepted is the way of foolness.
Very fortunate the ones who try to be full inside; only they can
really discard the external foolishness. Fools are they who want
fullness outside through accumulating health, wealth, power, name
or fame. But only one who has fullness inside can discard the
foolness outside.
The earth is populated mostly by fools and everything around us
here is foolishness. Foolishness means to see the unreal as real.
We search for permanent pleasure in money, sex, cars, food and so
on. But they are really only the cause of pain. They cannot be the
means for permanent pleasure. Are we not foolish? Rich people fear
losing their wealth to thieves or “market forces”. Young people
fear aging. People of supposed importance fear enemies and
opposition. And we even fear being unable to repeat our small
enjoyments with the thought, “May I never cease to be [alive]!”
What a wonder, that we see the fire which burns us and yet we wish
for coolness from it, and then we crash and burn jumping into
it!
All the texts, all the sadhana are also for fools. One should not
think that we meditaters are not fools. Only they are the means,
practicing it we eliminate our foolishness. The veil of foolishness
is called Maya, which covers all the mind of the universe. So that
the foolishness does not allow us to know our real self. We say I
am this or I am that. If you are Hafiz or Sandeep or John your name
was not with you when you born. What did your face look like before
you were born? If you are in middle age, say 50 or so, look at a
picture of your childhood. Are you same person? We do not really
know anything of ourselves but we compose a great, voluminous text
of ourselves. People in India often say- “One tells the stories of
whole Ramayana but he does not know if Sita was a male or
female.”
On this earth the more one knows (of information or worldly
knowledge) more of a fool one is. Meditation is the process of
elimination of all the information and the distractions that we
have accumulated. Discarding this “knowledge” and these
impressions, one becomes completely naked and is born from the
foolness, becoming fully (purnam) a boon for mankind and for al the
world.
A sadhaka also should be like a fool in the external world. If one
shows themselves to be a great yogi, you can not practice well. All
the people of the world will come to such a person and ask nonsense
questions and disturb his sadhana. Once Lao Tzu (father of Taoism)
was walking with his disciples where the carpenters were cutting
many trees to make a palace. They left only one tree. Lao Tzu asked
why they left this big tree. They replied because this tree is of
no use. He advise his disciple-“Be like this tree and live long to
give shadow and fruits to the humanity for a long time. Do not sell
your spirituality otherwise you will be in
trouble”.
When one obtains the state of fullness inside one becomes a real
fool in another way. Knowing everything one behaves as one does not
know anything, like a fool. But the people of this world are really
do not know anything besides some information, but they do not
accept they are fool. If you say someone “you fool” h/she will kill
you. But a realized one will be still, undisturbed if you tell
him/her fool or disturb him. And that person’s stillness and
peacefulness will calm the disturbance of anyone who comes into
their presence.
I do not know much about April Fools’ Day, even I do not know if it
is April full day. Only I know that on this day people tell lies.
Last year my friend told me- “ someone is waiting for you in the
guardroom.” Leaving my class and other things I rushed to meet him
but nobody was there. I became angry to him. He said – “ha ha ha
April fool.” This day teaches us not to be disturbed by foolishness
untruthful situations. For sadhakas time, space and causation has
no value. They value one pointedness and centering in one’s own
self. One cannot clean this world through anger or worry, but one
needs one’s own stillness to clean one’s own mind before trying to
help others.
On this day one becomes aware the effect of falseness. When
somebody says something false, what happens to our mind and
emotions? In this same way what would become of this world if
everybody is the devotee of untruthfulness? So on this day, knowing
the problems with untruth, one should resolve to be truthful in all
matters in life. That’s the message of April fool.
May the April fool lead you to the path of truthfulness.
May the April fool make you a real fool, where there would be no
ego, no bondage, no veils.
May the April fool make you aware that state of fullness which is
only truth. (Jagan mithya is controversial. I like the shakta
position that the world is both real and
illusory.)
May God and Guru bless you. (Thanks Vishnu ji)
and thanks Anna for a wonderful translation.
