The third Niyama is 'Tapas', which means the strength or heat and
it is a form of penance, which causes realization of self and of
God and also Yogi being unaffected by opposites, such as heat and
cold, hunger and thirst, sitting and standing, etc.
For example when Gold become dirty then the jewelers put this Gold
in fire to make it again come to the pure and original from once
again, the same way, when body, mind unbalanced and can’t make
decision or stuck in duals, like what to do, what not to do or
which practice is good or bad etc. that time Tapas can make body
and mind again came to pure level and help to make
balance.
It also refers to the activity of keeping the body fit, or to
confront and handle the inner urges without outer show. Tapas also
signify cleansing the inner debris existing in the body, through
asanas and pranayama. 'Tapas' deals with correct eating habits and
breathing patterns. The main purpose of this rule is to make our
mind pure and clean.
Many
times, you may see the description of Tapas as "austerity."
Unfortunately, most people still do not understand because Tapas
cannot be explained in one word or sentence. Tapas is a spiritual
discipline with the objective of self-transformation and spiritual
purification. It may consist of intense prayer, meditation, and
asana practice. If yogi practice Tapas then he/she can away from
duals like can make balance in any kind of situation and will stay
calm and peaceful way.
