Halasana (Plough or Plow Pose)

Halasana <wbr>(Plough <wbr>or <wbr>Plow <wbr>Pose)
Hala = Plough or Plow
Asana = Pose.

So halasana means the plough pose.

Technique :

1. Lie down on spine position, legs together, toes pointed and hands besides the thighs and palms facing towards the ground. Inhale and raise your legs up to 90 angle, and then exhale and bend from the hip joints to slowly lower your toes to the floor above and beyond your head. As much as possible, keep your torso perpendicular to the floor and your legs fully extended.

2. With your toes on the floor, lift your top thighs and tailbone toward the ceiling and draw your inner groins deep into the pelvis. Imagine that your torso is hanging from the height of your groins. Continue to draw your chin away from your sternum and soften your throat. Hand fingers crossed, and arms firmly on the ground. Use the strength of your arms, shoulders and back, don't put whole body weight on your neck.But is you feel uncomfortable then you can place your hands on yours back to support. During this asana put your whole concentration on your spine. keep go on with normal breathing.

3. Then inhale and slowly slowly with the power of your arms and abdomen let your spine come back on the ground, and then with exhale let your legs slowly slowly come donw on the ground, relax in Savasana (Dead pose) for a while.

4. Don't forget to practice counter pose of this asana as a fish pose or cobra pose.


Halasana <wbr>(Plough <wbr>or <wbr>Plow <wbr>Pose)                  Beginners can put the hands on the back, likewise above picture.

  • Reduces stress and fatigue
  • Therapeutic for backache, headache, infertility, insomnia, sinusitis

Contra Indications :
  • Diarrhea
  • Menstruation
  • Neck injury
  • Asthma & high blood pressure: Practice Halasana with the legs supported on props.
  • Pregnancy: If you are experienced with this pose, you can continue to practice it late into pregnancy. However, don't take up the practice of Halasana after you become pregnant.
  • With the feet on the floor, this pose is considered to be intermediate to advanced. It is not advisable to perform the pose in this way without sufficient prior experience or unless you have the supervision of an experienced instructor.
