汽车涂料要经过大约5道工序，第一道是预处理Pretreatment，Conversion coating that improves corrosion resistance and paint Adhesion，主要是提高涂料与车体的黏合强度，其次是提高防腐蚀能力。第二道是电泳Electrocoat， Electrically deposited coating that protects metal from corrosion，电泳的好处是覆盖面广，电泳漆在非常隐蔽的部位，如翻边以及箱式结构，仍能形成完整的保护膜，从而得到较高的防腐蚀性。（Formation of protective films in highly recessed areas such as flanges and box sections provides critical corrosion protection）

第三道是中涂 Primer Surfacer，Spray applied coating that improves surface smoothness, durability and protects against chip。可以提高汽车表面光洁度。第四道是底漆Basecoat，也是最重要的一道工序， Color coat that adds the decorative chroma and aesthetic effects，色彩和装饰效果都取决于Basecoat。最后是清漆Clearcoat，Final coating layer that provides protection and shine to the vehicle to maintain it’s showroom like finish
