闻一多是著名诗人、学者、爱国民主战士。他五四运动时在北京清华大学读书时即参加学生运动，曾代表学校出席全国学联会议。1922年赴美国芝加哥美术学院学习，后来研究文学。1925年5月回国后，历任青岛大学、清华大学教授。1923年出版第一部诗集《红烛》，闪烁着反帝爱国的火花，1928年出版第二部诗集《死水》，表现出深沉的爱国主义激情。在这以后致力於古典文学的研究。1937年抗战开始，他在昆明西南联大任教。抗战八年中，他留了一把鬍子，发誓不取得抗战的胜利不剃去，表示了抗战到底的决心。1943年后，因目睹蒋介石反动政府的腐败，於是奋然而起，积极参加反对独裁，争取民主的斗争。1945年为中国民主同盟会委员兼云南省负责人、昆明《民主周刊》社社长。“一二·一”惨案发 生后，他更英勇地投身爱国民主运动，最后献出了宝贵生命。遗著由朱自清编成《闻一多全集》四卷。

Wen Yiduo, originally named Jiahua, was born at Xishui county in Hubei Province on November 24, 1899.

Wen Yiduo is a distinguished poet, scholar and democratic patriot soldier. Early in “The May-Fourth Movement”, he participated in the student movement at Qinghua University and once attended the Congress of National Students League. In 1922 he went to USA for further study at College of Fine Arts, later on literature. Back to China in May, 1925, he served as Professor at Qingdao University and Qinghua University. In 1923 he published his first poetry book of Red Candle twinkled with sparkles of anti-imperialism patriotism. In 1928 he published his second poetry book of Dead Water with deep patriotic passion. Later he committed himself to researches on classical literature. Since 1937, he had been teaching in The South-Western United University in Kunming. During eight-year resistance war against Japanese, he had been wearing whiskers to show his determination to keep on resistance to the end. After 1943, he stood in anger, very positive in struggle for democracy against autarchy, corruption of government. In 1945 he served as the council member of China Democracy League, Head of Yunnan Province and the Proprieter of Democracy Weekly in Kunming. After “the December-First Massacre”, he threw himself in the democratic patriot movement and even devoted his life in the end. His posthumous work was compiled by Zhu Ziqing as The Collection of Wen Yiduo(four volumes).
