戴望舒是中国现代著名诗人，他中学就读于皮市巷上的宗文中学堂。1923年，戴望舒考入上海大学文学系，同施蛰存（也是杭州人）、杜衡创办《璎珞》旬刊，译魏尔伦的诗。他译诗的时候，正是写《雨巷》的时候。1925年入上海震旦大学学习法文，开始受到法国象征派的影响。1932年后留学法国、西班牙。1938年赴香港，主编《星岛日报》副刊。1941年底香港沦陷，被日军以抗日罪名下狱，次年春被营救出狱。抗战胜利后回上海教书。1949年6月以后戴望舒在北京新闻总署国际新闻局从事编译工作，1950年因病逝世。

戴望舒著有诗集《我底记忆》、《望舒草》、《望舒诗稿》和《灾难的岁月》等。

Dai Wangshu, a native of Hangxian, Zhejiang, was born on March 5, 1905. He was a well-known contemporary poet. He went to Zongwen Middle School of Pishi. In 1923 he was enrolled in the Department of Chinese Literature of Shanghai University. Together with Shi Zhicun (also a native of Hangzhou) and Du Heng, he initiated the magazine “Necklace” and translated poems by Wei Erlun. While translating poems, he was writing the novel “Lane in the Rain”. In 1925 he went to study French in Aurora University in Shanghai. There he began to be influenced by the Symbolist School of France. After 1932, he studied in France and Spain. In 1938 he went to Hong Kong and acted as the editor- in-chief of Sing Tao Daily, and worked in charge of the supplement. In the end of the year, Hong Kong was captured, and he was put into prison for resistance against Japan. Next year he was rescued out of the prison. When victory was won, he returned and worked as a teacher in Shanghai .After June, 1949, he worked as editor and translated at the International News Bureau of the General Administration of Journalism. He died of disease in 1950.

Dai’s works are poem collections : “My Memory”. “Wangshu’s Grass”. “Verses by Wangshu”, “Times of Disasters”, etc.
