One day Francisco picked up a passenger at the international
airport and drove him to a five-star hotel. After an hour, they
arrived. The man paid him, and entered the hotel carrying a
small suitcase. Francisco looked at his watch. It was
nine o'clock at night. He thought, "I've had a good day. I'm going
home".
The next morning when he opened the door of his taxi, he noticed
there was a briefcase on the floor in the back of the car. He
remembered that his passenger at the airport was carrying it.
Francisco decided to return it to the man at the hotel. But there
was no name on the briefcase. So he opened it. It was full of
dollars. But his conscience (良心)
wouldn't let him keep it. However, if he took it to the police,
they wouldn't believe his story. He hid the briefcase in the house
and jumped into his taxi.
Francisco turned on the radio and listened to the news. He heard
this report: "An Italian soccer club manager lost a briefcase with
very important documents. He is offering a $5,000 reward to the

B. Choose the best answer

It's not easy to be an astronaut's son. Everybody expects you to be
special or perfect. I often wonder how my father ever had a son
like me. I mean he's so special and so good at everything he does.
Even in middle school he was class president and captain of the
football team.
Well, to be honest, I often dream about
being some kind of hero or doing something special—like saving a
child from a burning building or discovering a new star. I was
daydreaming at school one morning when my teacher said there would
be a Father's Day writing competition for the whole school. "I hope
we have a winner right here in my class," my teacher said. When I
got home, I started to think about what to write. My father is an
astronaut. No, I wouldn't start like that. That was the way others
saw him. How did I see my father? Hmm, I saw him sitting with me in
the dark when I had a terrible dream. I remembered how he hugged me
for hours when my dog Spotty was killed by a car. Yes, these were
the things I was going to write. To me, he wasn't just a
world-famous astronaut. He was my dad. My parents and I went to
school on Thursday night. There were so many people in the big
hall! My dad looked at me, and I shrugged
(耸肩). The
third prize was announced and it was not me. I was
relieved but still disappointed at the same
time. Then the second prize was announced. It was me.
I went up to the stage and read what I had
written, "My father's son". When I finished, the people stood up
and cheered. 1 saw my father blowing his nose. Tears were running
down my mother's face. Dad cleared his throat and put his hand on
my shoulder. "Son, this is the proudest moment of my
life."
It was the proudest moment of my life,
too. Maybe I'll never be a great hero or win a Nobel Prize, but it
is enough just to be my father's son.

How to concentrate
(集中) your
mind? First of all, you should keep good habits in life. For
example, you should have good m
92
to keep
healthy. Breakfast is the most important of all. Not all people
understand this. A number of students hurry to school in the
morning without breakfast. Thus, they will feel quite
h
93
in class in the morning.
They aren't able to concentrate their entire mind on their study
and the teacher's words. They will be thinking about what to eat
after class. Do you act like this? If so,
I hope that you can get up a little e
94
and have
enough time to have a good breakfast before going to school. This
good habit will help you a lot in your life and study.
Secondly, reading aloud will help you to focus your attention on
o
95
thing. You
should spend ten to twenty minutes reading articles or poems every
day. While you are doing this, you should make your mouth, eyes and
brain work t
96
. You should try not to make any mistakes while you are reading.
This will help you to concentrate and keep your mind in a very good
state. If you keep doing this, you can i
97
your
understanding ability and you will be active, too.
Thirdly, never watch horror films, TV plays or read disturbing
stories in the evening, which may distract your attention the next
day in class.
Lastly, you should do some sports and never stay up too late. All
these things will help you to feel less sleepy and t
98
in class. So you can
listen to the teacher carefully.
E. Answer the questions
(根据短文内容回答下列问题): ( 14 分)
It was Valentine's Day and I was the new
guy at work. My boss handed me a heart-shaped balloon and said,
"Happy Valentine's Day'."
My cubicle (小室) was
one of the hundreds in a large house. If I went to the bathroom, or
was just coming in the house to start my day, I got lost. Every
cubicle looked the same, I tied the balloon to the wall of my
cubicle, I thought I would be able to find it easily. An hour
later, I stood up and looked around. Every cubicle had a red
heart-shaped balloon. For a short time I thought I was different,
but I was wrong. I was not the only person with a balloon. Memories
from the past came to my mind.
"Stop shaking the floor!" Dad said. Our
house was too small, so it was impossible not to bother our father.
We tried to walk softly, but the floor still shook.
Years later, 1 had my own family. Our
house was on the side of a hill, with a small hay below us. The
ocean currents filled the bay with fresh water. And the company I
worked for was quite near my house. However, the company made major
changes, so after fifteen years of service, I had to retire and
move. I was separated from my family. Life wouldn't allow us to
stay in one place. Ten months later, 1 was shocked to learn of my
wife's passing away. I always felt lonely.
In every case, I thought I was the only
one, but I was wrong. There were other families who were crowded in
a small house, other people who moved, and other spouses who lost
loved ones. We feel that we are facing unique problems, but in
fact, we're not. No matter what we face or how lonely we feel,
there are always others suffering from the same problems. However,
we can overcome the difficulties with our will and the help of
others. Don't think you are the unluckiest person in the
world.

on Valentine's Day when he was a new guy?
