Venice is a city in the north east of Italy famous throughout the world for its art and buildings and the huge romance of its watery setting. These are the main reasons why tourists love to visit it But Venice attracts people for other reasons. Between February 26 and March 8 the city holds a carnival(狂欢节). Then Venice is filled with excitement - or at least its tourists ate.

Carnival was first a Christian festival in which people celebrated before the fasting(斋戒)period of Lent(四旬斋), and remains so for many throughout the world. At the heart of carnival is the wearing of masks and costumes, dancing, eating and drinking.

In Venice, as elsewhere, costumes were first used to hide social identities, so that the nobility(贵族)looked no different to the commoners. It allowed different social classes to mix, if only for a few days a year. But today the carnival is an event largely for tourists. "Venetians don't dress up for Carnival after the age of 10," said Giuseppina Giudice, who has lived in the city all her life. "All we see of Carnival is a river of strangers who flow into town to feel 'Venetian'. They fill it, hula cheap mask and leave with nothing but photographs of St Mark's Square."

Some locals fear that Venice could become "little more than a theme park" because of the appeal(吸引力)of the city to tourists. In 2009, two social networking groups started organizing their own carnival. Visitors are invited. But there are no expensive tickets or fancy ball gowns(礼服)-just an old fashioned Italian street party.

"Tourists are welcome to our party - the more we can show them about the real Venice rather than the postcard Venice, the better," said Matteo Secchi of Venessia. com, one of the two organizers.

E. Answer the questions (根据短文内容回答下列问题): ( 14 )

For the rest of the month, an epidemic(传染病)will sweep across the US. It will keep kids home from school. College students will ignore piles of homework. Employees will suddenly lose their ability to concentrate.

The disease, known as "March Madness", refers to the annual US men's college basketball tournament(联赛). It begins on March 15 and lasts through the beginning of April. More than 60 teams compete(竞争)against each other in a lose-and-you're-out tournament that eventually crowns(加冕)a national champion.

Nearly 20 million Americans will find themselves prisoners of basketball festival madness.

The competition's high Hewer numbers mean that a lot of money can be made out of it. Schools make the tournament get on TV, which can bring them more fame and admissions applications. Advertisers and TV broadcasters also cash in on the games.

The "madness", however, is not just about the money. College basketball players are not paid. They play for pride. And in some people's minds, that's worth more than anything else in the world. Most Americans feel a strong connection with their schools, whether it's an Ivy League university or a less well-known college. So when your university joins this tournament, that's worth celebrating.

But perhaps an even greater part of the tournament is its uncertainty, knowing that anything could happen. The fun comes from guessing the winners for every game. Friends compete against friends. Husbands against wives Colleagues(同事)against bosses.

A big school can lose to a small one. And players with no chance at the NBA can try to make their name on a last-second shot.

In fact, the tournament's lasting appeal(吸引力)may just he the country's love of underdogs(弱者). Americans love it when the little person can find success, and there may be no greater stage for fids in American sports than college basketball's "March Madness".

99. What is the disease known as?

100. When does the college basketball tournament begin?

101. How many Americans will be prisoned by the basketball festival madness?

102. Why schools make the tournament get on TV?

103. What is worth more in some people's minds?
